Chapter 10, Happiness arrived so suddenly
You may call me Mrs. McAdoo, coffee, nurse, thank you! The lady had put on her sunglasses again at some point, clearly unwilling to reveal her true self in front of anyone other than Wang Geng
Wang Geng felt that the distance between himself and the goddess of fortune had never been as close as it was at this moment
President Thomas Woodrow Wilson of the United States
She turned around, biting her lip, and said, "You are Catherine's savior; our family should have no secrets from you. My husband is William Gibbs McAdoo, the Secretary of the Treasury!" What the heck! McAdoo, it turns out, is McAdoo! William Gibbs McAdoo! He served as Secretary of the Treasury in Wilson's cabinet from 1913 to 1918, wait a minute!
Is Catherine your daughter's name? That is a beautiful name. How is she doing now? The water was really cold yesterday; is she alright? Wang Geng felt a bit concerned about the little girl he had rescued yesterday, seeing that this young woman had come alone.
Mrs. McAdoo's expression was complex, as if she wanted to say something but hesitated. She walked to the door and listened; the corridor outside was quiet, clearly indicating that no one was present.
Joking aside, here I am, a solitary figure in the same room, and if Kelly sees me, this seemingly virtuous person holding the hand of a stunning married woman, those who know will understand that I am comforting a family member, while those who do not will think I am flirting with a married woman
Looking at the life-saving benefactor who smiled at her without speaking, the young woman suddenly realized that wearing sunglasses was somewhat impolite. She quickly withdrew her hand and took off her sunglasses, revealing a stunning yet slightly haggard face. Although it was evident that she had made an effort to touch up her makeup before coming, the impact of yesterday's unexpected incident was clearly still lingering.
"Um..." Mrs. McAdoo hesitated for a moment and said softly, "My husband works in the Cabinet, and I hope you can understand his reluctance to make a big fuss about it. You are a West Point cadet, and you know that the question of whether the United States should go to war in Europe has been troubling them for quite some time!" "Your husband is a member of the Cabinet? May I be so bold as to ask for your husband's name?" Wang Geng was overjoyed upon hearing this; it was as if someone had sent a pillow just when he was feeling sleepy. His mind was racing, but he couldn't recall which member of Wilson's Cabinet had the surname McAdoo, so he had to ask straightforwardly.
As soon as Kelly stepped out, the young Mrs. McAdoo took off her sunglasses. Before she could speak, she began to choke up. "Mr. Wang, I don't know how to thank you for your heroic act yesterday. You are the savior of Catherine and our entire family... I was so careless yesterday... Catherine's hat was blown away by the wind... I didn't hold on tight enough, and when she went to retrieve her hat, she slipped into the water... I should have jumped in... But you know I can't swim... The people by the river were either old or women and children." Seeing Mrs. McAdoo in tears after just a few words, Wang Geng gently comforted her while retrieving a new towel from the restroom to hand to her to wipe her eyes.
"Madam, you said your name is Eleanor, then... then... you are... you are..." Wang Geng was so astonished that he was momentarily speechless
"Coffee! Understood, coming right up! Mrs. McAdough!" Kelly let out a slight hum through her nose, then softened her expression as she turned to Wang Geng, saying, "Gun, would you like some tea instead?" "Tea! Tea! Thank you, Kelly!" Wang Geng nodded helplessly. Kelly turned around, closed the door, and stepped out. Wang Geng let out a sigh, puzzled by the palpable tension between the two women.
I am Wang Geng, a third-year Chinese cadet at West Point. I sincerely apologize for making you wait downstairs. May I ask for your esteemed surname?" As Wang Geng invited the visiting lady to take a seat, he said with a smile.
"May I ask, does your husband work for the U.S. government in Washington? You know, I have a couple of good friends who also live in Washington. I spent last Christmas at their home!" Wang Geng said with a smile
Seeing Wang Geng hesitate, Mrs. McAdough said, "You need not worry about matters at West Point. My husband is acquainted with several of your previous superintendents, and the child's grandfather also wishes to meet the lifesaver of little Catherine. However, both of them have been extremely busy in Washington lately, so they are currently unable to come to New York to visit you." "Is your husband working in Washington?" Wang Geng felt a stir in his heart upon hearing this.
There was another sound of banging at the door. Before Wang Geng could stand up to open it, Kelly, holding a tray with both hands, pushed the door open with her back and turned to enter. Wang Geng hurriedly went to help her. The nurse glanced at Mrs. McAdoo, who was sitting in the chair. This young woman, whose appearance was not inferior to her own, subtly made Kelly feel a bit disheartened
"Yes, Marry me. My full name before becoming a wife is Eleanor Randolph Wilson! Thomas Woodrow Wilson is my father, and I am his youngest daughter!" Eleanor nodded and said
You may call me Eleanor, Mr. Wang! Catherine is my greatest love in this world, and the neighbors like to call her the porcelain doll. Mr. Wang, is your health all right? I truly apologize for yesterday; as soon as her father received the news, he immediately sent someone to take us away. My health is fine; I am just hiding from the media. Mr. McAdoo's concern for his daughter is completely understandable. Moreover, if I can avoid staying in the hospital, I certainly will; I have no choice but to stay here, otherwise I would have to return to military school... As you know, life in military school is rather rigid and dull. At the very least, I want to see you, and I do not wish to be here so conveniently!
Your daughter is only four years old? She really looks like a big child, so beautiful like a porcelain doll. I thought she was six or seven years old. We Chinese say, "Surviving great hardships brings future blessings." Madam, you should be happy at this moment; crying too much can easily lead to dark circles under your eyes. " Wang Geng gently patted the young woman's hand to comfort her while discreetly pulling back the hand that had been grasped by the woman.
Nurse Kelly, with a stern expression, entered from outside. Wang Geng turned around and said, "Nurse Kelly, could you please bring this lady a cup of ... coffee or hot tea?" Wang Geng inquired, seeking the preference of the young woman seated in the chair.
We have relatives and houses in both New York and Washington, but since I got married four years ago, I have been living with my husband in Washington. This time I came to New York to visit my sister said Mrs. McAdoo
"Wang Geng, the doctor said what you need most right now is rest. You have been busy since you woke up this morning without a moment's pause. If you faint again, who knows when you will wake up!" Kelly muttered softly while threatening Wang Geng, and at the same time, she defiantly pushed her chest forward towards the young woman over there, unwillingly turning and leaving!
In front of Wang Geng stood a young married woman whose elegant yet understated headscarf enveloped her hair. Sunglasses concealed most of her face, but beneath the glasses, her delicate nose, fair skin, and red lips made her appear no older than twenty-seven or twenty-eight. Her long, cool hands were tightly clasped together.
The name Catherine was given by her grandfather. She is doing well, but she was frightened, which is why I didn't bring her today. Poor child, she is only four years old and almost lost her life due to my negligence. Mr. Wang, you didn't just save Catherine yesterday; you saved me and our entire family!" As she spoke, Mrs. McAdoo raised her head and tightly grasped Mr. Wang's hand, her beautiful face reflecting a mixture of gratitude in her eyes and tear stains.
Staying here as a third wheel, the girl feared losing her composure and couldn't help but argue with that woman. Speaking of which, even Kelly herself couldn't figure out how such hostility had surged forth so fiercely!
Mrs. McAdough certainly observed the performance of the beautiful nurse. Clearly, the hospital room was not the best place for communication with a lifesaver. After Kelly left, Mrs. McAdough stood up and gently said, "Mr. Wang, I am happier than anyone else that you have awakened. Catherine has been insisting on meeting you, her uncle, in person. We can never repay you enough for saving her life. My husband has been in meetings these past few days and could not come to thank you in person!" Wang Geng smiled and replied, "Madam, you need not worry. Although Catherine was unfortunately frightened by the incident, I received the honorary citizenship of New York for saving her. The world is so vast, and New York is so large; at that moment, I was there and was able to save Catherine, which is clearly God's will. You need not take it too seriously!" Mrs. McAdough gently nodded, "You are right. You are the angel sent by God to save Catherine and our entire family. I wonder when you will be discharged from the hospital. My husband and I would like to invite you to our home as our guest; you must come!" Wang Geng scratched his head, thinking to himself that he did not have that much time to spend with her and her family. There were countless matters waiting for him to attend to, and he still had no leads on how to connect with President Wilson.
