Chapter 8, the Generous Young Master Xu

Dark Small Medium Large Original Scroll to Bottom

This scholar, Master Xu, is indeed such a reckless person

The person disguised as a man then stood up, took a few steps, and approached Scholar Xu's side, saying: "I am Ou Qing. Earlier, my younger brother spoke rudely and may have offended you. May I ask your esteemed surname and name?"

Scholar Xu picked up the dried fruit and ate it, not caring at all about what the two people behind him looked like

Indeed, Xu Xiucai spoke up and said: "Yang Lixin, you are nothing but a man of empty reputation. As a son of a noble family, lamenting the spring, summer, autumn, and winter every day, is it not a case of a healthy person moaning for no reason? You see everything with sorrow, and then pile up words, which somehow becomes poetry; it is utterly ridiculous!"

Looking at the two people in the back seat, they were already in a state of astonishment. Only Yun Shuhuan responded: "A few points more brilliant! It can deceive women better than Yang Yi's words."

Xu Jie turned his head upon hearing this and asked in confusion, "Yun, it seems you have also seen through this Western merchandise long ago. This pair of siblings is quite decent, their demeanor is not lacking. However, this name is probably false."

Scholar Xu spoke boastfully without shame, while Yun Shuhuan, upon hearing this, said nothing and merely lowered his head. This, however, drew the displeasure of those around them

Yun Shuhuan, upon hearing this, did not respond, clearly choosing not to engage in a debate with Xu Xiucai. He was well aware that this young master had exceptional talent in poetry and literature; even the poems he casually wrote while practicing calligraphy at home were remarkable works. Just a line or two from him could easily become a well-crafted verse. Although he was not widely known and only received praise within a small local circle, Yun Shuhuan's admiration for him had been building over time.

To achieve fame, one's own abilities are only one aspect; the primary factor relies on channels. Without promotional channels, it is akin to Xu Xiucai in a small county like Qingshan; even if he produces great works, without anyone to praise him or spread his name, he will remain obscure. This is also why scholars tend to gravitate towards larger places, with Jiangnan being a gathering place for literati, followed by the capital Bianzhou.

Scholar Xu smiled knowingly, saying that if one were to speak of the nickname of Yun's daughter, it would merely be a jest. This individual truly resembled a young lady, dressed in a scholar's long gown, yet could not conceal the feminine allure of cosmetics.

Scholar Xu rose and smiled, saying: "You are all young masters and young ladies from prominent families, there is no need to be so courteous with someone like me, a mere person from the countryside."

A plate of dried fruits, several pieces of sliced meat, some melon seeds, and a few pots of clear tea constitute the standard setup for seating in a tea house. If one desires food and wine, the tea house can also provide it. Although it is called a tea house, it also offers meals, wine, and snacks; merely selling tea would not sustain such an establishment. Those that only sell tea are the roadside tea stalls.

Yun Shuhuan replied, "No!"

This woman, before going out, needs to change into a different outfit, which clearly indicates that she does not come from a humble background

However, Yun Shuhuan saw the two individuals quickly walk out of the teahouse and spoke up, saying: "It should not be said so openly"

If one were to arrive at Dajiang County, it would be entirely different. In the city of Dajiang County, that is where true prosperity lies. It is a genuine haven for cultured individuals, with brothels and small residences, courtesans and pleasure boats, and all manner of entertainment available.

A song was sung by a young girl, and once it concluded, the entire teahouse was filled with applause and cheers. Whether it was good or bad, most of the people present, who had likely not read much, probably could not discern the nuances. However, upon hearing the name Yang Lixin, they clapped their hands, merely to showcase their exceptional taste; in a word, it was a display of "affectation of elegance"

Upon hearing this, Scholar Xu feigned a roll of his eyes and looked at Yun Shuhuan, saying: "Young man Yun, I usually don’t see you speak much, yet now you are speaking twice. Is it that you cannot bear to see me, the young master, doing well?"

Xu Xiucai thought for a moment and simply said: "Wu Yan and Wu Boyan. Their poetry and verses are unparalleled in this era, and there is none that can surpass them in the world today"

At this moment, an old man playing the erhu appeared from somewhere, sitting on a small platform, and began to sing a theatrical tune. In fact, this tune is more popular among the general public, with many of the lyrics altered. Although it is not explicitly lewd, it still contains many suggestive elements reminiscent of lascivious songs. The arrangement of such programs in the teahouse is intended to cater to both refined and popular tastes, thereby attracting more customers

Upon seeing the person disguised as a man gesture back twice, the young man stepped forward and said: "I am Owen Feng, pleased to meet you"

Yun Shuhuan was clearly speaking up for that woman, and added: "It was a bit disrespectful."

Xibei refers to fake goods, with "Jia" being a homophone for "fake". Therefore, Xibei goods are simply another term for counterfeit products

Upon seeing the woman disguised as a man, when her disguise was exposed, she immediately lowered her head, her face turning crimson in an instant. She could no longer maintain her previous demeanor and involuntarily took a few steps back, revealing her shyness. For a woman from a wealthy family, to venture out privately and have her disguise revealed is indeed exceedingly embarrassing

Xu Xiucai has high standards, and Yun Shuhuan accepts that. However, Yun Shuhuan also believes that this new work by Yang Lixin is indeed quite good

Yun Shuhuan also turned back to look, his brows slightly furrowed. He glanced at his own young master, knowing that his young master was not someone who would endure humiliation in silence

The young man accompanied his father to Qingshan County, where his father had business to attend to, while the young man merely enjoyed the scenic waterways. The person beside him, disguised as a man, was his elder sister. As the saying goes, one should read thousands of books and travel thousands of miles. Although this young man often accompanied his father around the Jiangjun area, it was his first time encountering such an audacious person in such a rural setting

A voice came from behind: "In this rural area, people are truly lacking in knowledge, so arrogant, it is utterly ridiculous"

Scholar Xu was taken aback upon hearing this. He turned around to look and saw two young men sitting behind him, of similar age to himself. Judging by their attire, they were clearly not from an ordinary family. The one who spoke had a demeanor of righteous indignation; although he did not name anyone specifically, his gaze locked with Scholar Xu's.

Xu Jie did not care in his heart, yet he did not want Yun Shuhuan to say even a single word: "The new words are excellent!"

At this moment, Yun Shuhuan was already wearing a look of longing, watching his young master, waiting for Scholar Xu to perform ten or eight tunes.

Scholar Xu was clearly well-acquainted with the place; coming to this teahouse to listen to a few tunes was not only a pastime but also a primary venue for receiving information from other regions. If he heard that the performers in the teahouse were singing new songs, Scholar Xu would arrive early to listen. New songs naturally meant new lyrics, most of which originated from the flourishing literary culture of Jiangnan, where the rise of notable figures was also dependent on these performers who sang their works throughout the vast expanse of the land. Consequently, the creators of these lyrics became renowned figures in their own right.

There are quite a few tea houses and taverns within the city. Although Qing Shan County does not have the renowned brothels of Jiangnan, it is not lacking in establishments for fleshly pleasures. The singers in the tea houses and taverns can also perform popular lyrics and local tunes.

Scholar Xu chuckled upon hearing this: "Isn't it also amusing to see her leave in embarrassment?"

The young man, after being surprised, blushed and, not knowing when to speak, demonstrated a basic level of appreciation for the nuances of the lyrics.

The lyrics and music naturally resonate, and upon hearing Yang Yi's name, Scholar Xu felt a lack of interest. There are many renowned figures in Jiangnan, but there are not many whom Scholar Xu finds worthy of his attention, such as Wu Yan and Wu Boyan. The lyrics are grand and unrestrained, exuding a carefree and uninhibited spirit, evoking a feeling akin to reading the poetry of Li Bai. Scholar Xu is extremely fond of this. If there are new lyrics from Wu Boyan, Scholar Xu would undoubtedly display an expression of eager anticipation, much like that of Yun Shuhuan.

After finishing, Scholar Xu chuckled to himself and said, "Hmm, this poem is very timely. However, it is far superior to that of Yang Yi"

Today, I shall sing a piece from the newly learned lyric form, "Sheng Sheng Man," which was recently composed by the renowned scholars Yang Yi and Yang Lixin from Jiangning Prefecture. The courtesans on the painted boats of Jiangnan have recently been singing this lyric, and I humbly present my rendition, hoping for your understanding. The young girl has long been accustomed to such occasions of singing and performing, and she is already quite skilled, showing no signs of nervousness.

The young man, however, remained unconvinced. Since ancient times, there has been no first in literature. Scholar Xu, however, ranked himself highly. Yet, Wu Yanzhi's poetry and prose were also unparalleled in their time. The young man could not refute this and merely said: "You are truly arrogant. Since you claim that Yang Lixin's fame is merely superficial, what remarkable works do you have? Can you stand shoulder to shoulder with the scholars of Jiangnan?"

Scholar Xu was cracking sunflower seeds, glanced up, and then lowered his head again to search for dried fruit to eat. Meanwhile, Yun Shuhuan perked up his ears, his face full of anticipation

Scholar Xu brandished a knife, ready to fight if challenged. Scholar Xu presented his arguments, which were also well-reasoned and substantiated

Xu Xiucai felt that he could not communicate with this Yun Shuhuan at all, so he could only take a seat and pretend to be angry

Qingshan County, originally a small county, is situated near the Fushui River, not far from the Yangtze River. Therefore, although Qingshan County is not large, it is not impoverished. While it may not compare to the regions of Jiangnan, it can be considered relatively affluent when compared to some counties in the northern regions.

The young man had already risen, trembling with anger, and could only say: "Come, you come, 'Sheng Sheng Man', let me hear you try a piece."

Scholar Xu has yet to have a courtesy name; the term "little person" is not meant as an insult, but rather indicates a lowly status. Scholar Xu seems to quite enjoy this feeling of suddenly gaining attention.

Xu Xiucai thought to himself, it is indeed that searching, lonely, sorrowful, and tragic sentiment found in "Sheng Sheng Man," which could be considered the foremost among such verses. However, Xu Xiucai felt it was not the right time for that, and he opened his mouth to say: "Originally, I intended to present a grand composition, but I feared it might startle you. Instead, let me offer you a casual piece. Listen well: In the severe and still weather, as the end of the year approaches, the cold plum blossoms quietly bloom on sparse branches. The pure and beautiful buds, gently concealed, reflect in the pavilion and pond. In the snow, they defy the cold to seek warmth, heralding the arrival of spring on behalf of the Eastern Lord, announcing the fragrance of blossoms ahead. Let me present you with a casual piece. The subtle fragrance wafts far, adorning the desolate forest and secluded garden, the scenery is delayed in its beauty. It possesses a unique charm, surpassing the flowers that do not wait for the gentle breeze to blow. With elegant demeanor and grace, it particularly stirs up longing. I shall bring it to the banquet in the painting hall, and before the wine cup, I will recite and cherish it. Gradually, as it fully blooms, who can say how the wildflowers and grasses know of leisure?"

It was indeed the woman disguised as a man, who also looked up at Yun Shuhuan.

The young man speaking had an expression as if he were watching a show, waiting for Xu Xiucai to reveal his flaws and make a fool of himself

Scholar Xu is also acquainted with this young girl, who has been singing in this teahouse for two years, from the age of twelve to fourteen. She used to have an old man playing the erhu as her companion, who would usually sing some minor tunes from operatic scripts. However, today the old man is not seen by her side.

When Yun Shuhuan said this, Xu Xiucai became truly displeased. Yun Shuhuan was not one of those who had not read much; Xu Xiucai was aware of Yun Shuhuan's level of education and felt that his abilities were not low. Upon hearing Yun Shuhuan's words, Xu Xiucai immediately remarked: "Young Yun, you really lack appreciation. Just look at Xu Lixin's lyrics. Throughout the entire piece, whether it is the spring breeze, the autumn wind, or the winter, everything is filled with sorrow. What is there to be sad about? To forcefully express sorrow in new lyrics is merely a trick to deceive women's tears, which is truly beneath contempt."

On the stage sat a young girl, who was not particularly beautiful. In her hands, she held a pipa that appeared somewhat worn. However, the music she played was quite melodious.

Scholar Xu had long realized that this person was disguised as a man. Hearing the voice that was hoarse yet still soft, he was not surprised and simply smiled, saying: "A country bumpkin, Xu Jie"

Xu Xiucai could not help but glance at the young man who appeared to be deep in thought. While he did not discern much else, he did notice a hint of something different. Beyond the delicate features of the young man's face, there was a certain resemblance in temperament to Yun Shuhuan.

Yun Shuhuan lowered his head and said no more, knowing that it was futile to say much to his own young master

What Yun Shuhuan thought, if it is seen, then it is seen; why must it be stated so bluntly? If it is stated, it would embarrass the young lady, and it would be intentional to put her in a difficult position, leaving her with no choice but to depart. This is indeed somewhat impolite

Seeing this scene, Xu Jie smiled even more and truly found it interesting

The stage in the teahouse is not large; singing, storytelling, or performances of other kinds, such as ventriloquism, all take place on that small stage

The boy who had just spoken noticed that his companion, disguised as a man, remained silent. He turned around and said, "Yang Lixin is, after all, one of the most distinguished talents in Jiangnan. With such audacity, why don't you tell me whose poetry can be praised?"

Why is the young man in such a hurry? It is because he sees that his sister is already too embarrassed to raise her head, fidgeting restlessly. Staying any longer is not an option; he can only leave quickly.

Scholar Xu truly does not take the words of the youth seriously, merely saying: "With such aimless moaning and groaning, I can compose eight or ten verses, fearing that you will not be able to withstand it"

The boy who spoke was slightly taken aback by Xu Xiucai's words, glancing at his companion beside him. He noticed that his companion, after listening to Xu Xiucai's remarks, was still in a state of deep contemplation.

Even the famous courtesans of Jiangnan would travel upstream along the river, arriving at the banks of the Great River County, much like a touring concert. What they brought were the new works of the renowned scholars from Jiangnan, leading a wave of contemporary trends. Naturally, the money earned was substantial, as making a profit is the motivation for venturing far from home

The young man, seeing his sister in such a manner, cupped his hands and said: "Brother Xu, your magnanimity is commendable. May we meet again by fate"
