Chapter 8: Rescue (II)
Lin Yan was bewildered; there were people everywhere, and he had no idea where Jessica was. Fortunately, at that moment, he spotted a girl with curly hair and dark skin. His eyes lit up, and he quickly ran over to her, calling out: "Hey, Anna, how are you? Have you seen Jessica anywhere?"
Hey, darling, come out quickly, I will take you away from here, it is very dangerous here
Jessica, listen to me— Lin Yan did not want her to argue with Lin Feng, so he hurriedly came forward to dissuade her. At that moment, a loud click was heard; it was the sound of Lin Feng chambering a bullet into the handgun, her expression unchanged as she aimed the gun at Jessica
Lin Feng cast a cold glance at him, and David immediately made a gesture of zipping his lips, obediently falling silent.
Lin Yan finally felt relieved upon hearing this; it seemed that things were not too bad after all. At least the chaos was only on the streets, and the school had not been affected. He hurriedly thanked the gatekeeper and ran towards the teaching building with Lin Feng and David. Along the way, he saw many students and teachers, most of whom were unclear about what had actually happened. They only knew that there was an incident outside and it was dangerous, each one eager to find a way to contact their families. The mobile phones had no signal, and only a few public phones were available, resulting in long lines outside the phone booths. The school’s broadcast was repeatedly announcing notifications, reminding everyone not to leave the school casually until the situation was clarified, not to act alone, and to stay in well-lit areas with more people. Lin Feng frowned at the chaotic scene and quickly caught up to pull Lin Yan, saying, "Where are you planning to go to find Jessica?"
Sister, you are an intelligence officer hidden among the people
I have no other intentions; it's just that my parents are in another city. Just take me to the highway, and I will take care of the rest of the journey myself
Jessica, upon seeing that the danger had passed, had long since opened the door and rushed out, burying herself in Lin Yan's arms, both hitting and crying, incessantly expressing how terrified she was and how horrifying those monsters had been. Lin Yan, gently stroking her hair, offered her words of comfort, while feeling quite impatient, thinking to himself that this wasn't a movie, and wondering why they weren't hurrying to leave instead of her rambling on.
Seeing Lin Yan still dazedly running towards the main gate, Lin Feng grabbed him by the collar: "The gatekeeper won't let us out, let's climb over the wall."
Fortunately, the university attended by Lin Yan and the others is not too far away, but navigating through several blocks in such a chaotic situation is indeed quite challenging. There are not many police officers in the small town, so it is inevitable that they are somewhat powerless in maintaining order. Lin Feng does not know what exactly has happened; she sees that all the doors on the street are tightly shut, and many people are running around in a panic like headless flies. From time to time, ambulances and fire trucks rush by with their piercing sirens. She wants to stop someone to ask about the situation, but Lin Yan is running too fast, so she has to give up on that idea and chase after her.
Nancy hurriedly took it, glanced at her a few times, wanted to say something but ultimately said nothing, burying her head and trying to quicken her pace. Meanwhile, Lin Yan and Jessica finally reached a consensus; Jessica no longer caused a scene, but still looked at Lin Feng with a resentful and uncomprehending gaze.
The curtains of the window on the first floor were drawn open from the inside, and Jessica along with a brown-haired girl looked at them with faces full of panic, continuously gesturing as if urging them to remain silent
"What on earth happened? What are those things? It's terrifying; I saw them eating people with my own eyes." Jessica's makeup was ruined by tears, leaving two black streaks on her face, which looked quite frightening at first glance
It seems to be hiding under the car
Lin Yan hurriedly took out his identification to show the security guard: "I am a student inside, I just returned from outside. I saw that the street is in chaos; what exactly happened? My girlfriend is still inside, and I am very worried about her safety"
She stepped forward and kicked the corpse that had already melted away significantly, noticing that Lin Yan and David were staring at her as if they had seen a ghost. She couldn't help but raise an eyebrow and said, "You've played too much Resident Evil, right? Being bitten or grabbed by something like this won't get you infected."
Nancy, Nancy Anderson, a roommate from Jessica School, said, "Ah, I am studying medicine." Nancy, petite in stature and wearing glasses, appeared very quiet as she struggled to keep pace with Lin Feng while explaining.
Lin Feng truly regretted asking him that question
"Will you steal a car?" Lin Feng asked David
Lin Yan and her view were different. Upon seeing an unfamiliar car parked at the entrance, she felt a surge of joy and hurriedly raised her voice, calling out: "Jessica, Jessica!"
Count to three, either walk with us or die
After wandering for nearly twenty minutes, the number of people on the road dwindled, likely because everyone had run home to hide. The shops had all closed their doors, and the entire world seemed to suddenly fall silent, with not a single vehicle in sight. No matter how good Lin Feng's stamina was, after running for so long, she was quite exhausted. Fortunately, Lin Yan's small apartment was now visible from a distance. Lin Feng carefully observed her surroundings; the bodies on the ground had disappeared, leaving only two pools of blood. Instantly alert, she drew her gun. David, not understanding the situation, noticed her vigilance as she scanned the area and also disengaged the safety on his handgun. "There is no time for jokes, hurry up and find your Jessica." Lin Feng felt extremely anxious, instinctively sensing danger. However, now that she was already in the city, it was too late to turn back. It would be better to quickly find Jessica and randomly get a car to leave the city.
Jessica did not believe that Lin Feng would dare to pull the trigger. She was still unconvinced and wanted to say something, but having witnessed Lin Yan, who could kill without blinking, he knew that this was definitely not a joke. Therefore, he quickly covered Jessica's mouth and said, "Sister, we need to leave now"
David kept close behind and, upon witnessing this scene, even while running at high speed, he did not forget to whistle: "Cool, indeed every Oriental is a master of martial arts. Martial arts, martial arts, you know, I once visited a film studio and met that superstar—"
Lin Yan had not finished speaking when he heard a sound of wind behind his ear, which indicated that he was still relatively alert. He immediately lunged to the side, and before he could get up from the ground, he heard a gunshot, followed by the sound of something falling to the ground. He turned his head to look, and saw a "person" who was also devoid of skin collapsing on the ground, with smoke hissing from its body. Lin Feng's raised gun was still aimed in this direction and had not been lowered.
After Jessica finished speaking, she suddenly remembered that the person who fired the gun was Lin Feng, and couldn't help but glance at her with a hint of trepidation. Lin Yan, upon hearing her words, found them reasonable; although Lin Feng's words were quite terrifying, the situation didn't seem as dire, and it appeared to be under control now. He spoke to Lin Feng in a conciliatory tone: "Sister, Jessica makes a valid point. How about we first observe the situation at home before making any decisions?"
Three people arrived at the back door, and the wall appeared to be over two meters high. Lin Feng took a few steps to gain momentum, leaped into the air, and quickly grabbed the top of the wall, effortlessly climbing over it. With her assistance, the two men also scaled the wall. David had already concluded that they were special forces from the government and found nothing unusual about it. Lin Yan, well aware of what kind of person his sister was, looked at Lin Feng with an incredulous expression, scrutinizing her from head to toe.
Who are you? The school does not allow people to enter and exit casually now
"Where have you been? Jessica is very worried; it seems she went to your house looking for you," the girl said hurriedly, unable to hide the panic on her face. "Oh my, what on earth has happened? There are rumors everywhere about a man-eating monster."
I understand, it is to steal that armored cash transport vehicle Yes, yes, this is how it is usually portrayed in horror films, such vehicles are like steel fortresses, even when encountering such monsters, there is no need to worry
Feeling too lazy to engage in conversation with this slick-talking guy who seemed to be suffering from a movie addiction, Lin Feng closely followed Lin Yan. She was running quickly, preoccupied with thoughts of Jessica. Moreover, with crowds of people aimlessly running around the streets, she was very worried about accidentally losing Lin Yan. At this moment, when all mobile phones had become useless, Lin Feng couldn't help but curse herself for not preparing walkie-talkies or similar devices in advance. However, the situation in the United States was completely different from what she had experienced before. She had thought she would have an entire day to prepare properly, but the time difference and physical differences had thrown her into a flurry. The more Lin Feng thought about it, the angrier she became, even directing her frustration towards Americans. Just then, a young thug with brightly dyed hair bumped into her. Regardless of whether it was intentional or not, Lin Feng kicked him in the chin, sending him flying over a meter away.
After some thought, she took out a handgun and tossed it to Nancy: "Don't expect me to save you when you encounter danger"
David shrugged his shoulders and said, "Baby, this is not something I can decide."
Thank you, Anna. Lin Yan expressed his gratitude, muttering under his breath, "Damn it, she ran out, and she might be at my place now"
The originally three-person team suddenly increased to five. After walking for a while, although they did not encounter any danger, Lin Feng glanced at her watch and saw that it was nearly 2 PM. At this pace, when would they be able to leave the city? She looked around and suddenly spotted a bank not far away. Of course, the bank's doors were tightly closed at that moment. However, there was an armored truck parked at the entrance.
Lin Feng glanced at his watch and then at the increasingly darkening sky: "What are we waiting for? Hurry up and go find it."
Hmph. Lin Feng coldly laughed as she put away the gun; she had silently made up her mind to find an opportunity to eliminate Jessica without her noticing. A woman like her is nothing but a nuisance while alive
Lin Feng wanted to curse, yet was waiting for the government to come to the rescue? Don't dream! This is just the beginning. The ultraviolet rays in the daylight greatly suppress the mutations caused by meteor radiation. Once night falls, they will know what true hell on earth is. She cast a cold glance at Jessica and said slowly, "There will be no rescue, do not hope that everything will get better, it will only get worse. Staying here, I cannot guarantee that you will still be alive to see tomorrow's sun. Staying is your choice, but do not drag my brother into death with you."
Upon seeing his identification, the guard's expression improved slightly. He did not ask further questions and gestured for them to enter quickly: "You still don't know? Monsters have appeared on the streets, and many people have already died. Everyone is very scared. It is safer not to wander outside for now; try to stay in crowded places as much as possible"
Lin Feng was already walking briskly ahead, while Lin Yan and Jessica were trailing behind, the two of them seemingly engaged in a quiet argument. She glanced at the girl following her: "Who are you?"
Leaving? Why should we leave? The government will not abandon us. On the way here, I heard on the radio that more police and military forces will come to provide support. For now, we just need to stay at home. It is very dangerous outside, as you just saw.
Lin Feng did not respond clearly: "Sure."
Then, without waiting for her to say anything, David began to ramble on, seemingly having been quite uncomfortable before.
She initially asked casually, but to her surprise, David nodded without hesitation: "Yes."
After spending more than ten minutes, they finally arrived outside the university gate. Lin Yan, who usually exercises regularly, found it quite exhausting, sweating profusely and panting continuously. Lin Feng and David were also out of breath. After Lin Yan managed to calm his breathing slightly, he intended to enter, but was unexpectedly stopped by the gatekeeper.
Dear, do not be afraid, I will take you away from this city right now, it is no longer safe here. Lin Yan pulled her and tried to leave.
The girl who was with Jessica kept covering her mouth and did not dare to speak, as if she had been completely stunned by fear. Only now did she timidly approach. She did not dare to get close to Lin Feng and chose to speak to David, who appeared to be more amiable: "Excuse me, may I walk with you?"
Jessica's face flushed red upon hearing this: "Strange woman, who do you think you are, God? He is already an adult, and you have no right to dictate his thoughts!"
