The fifth chapter of the theory of the interaction between the body and the environment.

Dark Small Medium Large Original Scroll to Bottom

When the night passes without a fire, people disperse and wealth departs

The shade of his tree extends over the wall, bringing in abundant wealth

If neglect feels like autumn, from then on it gradually diminishes

When the door is left ajar, there will surely be servants who deceive their masters

If one throws a broken bowl into the toilet pit, from then on, one will witness poverty

Suddenly, strange grass grows on the roof, providing good shade for the household

On the first day of the twelfth month in the Year of the Tiger, at noon, several families began construction, all situated between neighboring cities. Three families sought divination from the master on this date and time; if they received the same hexagram, then the auspiciousness or inauspiciousness would be indistinguishable. The master added the numbers corresponding to each surname and made his judgments, all of which were verified. Among the three families seeking divination were those with the surnames Tian, Wang, and Han. The sum of the numbers for the Year of the Tiger (3), the twelfth month (12), and the first day (1) totals 16. Adding the four strokes of the surname Wang gives 20; subtracting 8 leaves 12, which corresponds to the hexagram Zhen (震) as the upper hexagram. Adding the number for noon (7) results in a total of 27; subtracting 3 and 8 gives 24, leaving 3, which corresponds to the hexagram Li (离) as the lower hexagram. From the 27, subtracting 4 and 6 gives 24, leaving 3 as the initial line, resulting in Feng (丰) changing to Zhen (震), with mutual appearances of Dui (兑) and Xun (巽). For the Tian surname, adding the six strokes of the character Tian results in the hexagram Shui Feng Jing (水风井), changing to Sheng (升), with mutual appearances of Li (离) and Dui (兑). For the Han surname, adding the number corresponding to 21 strokes results in Yi (益) changing to Zhong Fu (中孚), with mutual appearances of Gen (艮) and Kun (坤). Thus, the master harmonized the *Diagram* and *Book* with the numbers derived from each family's surname, interpreting the hexagrams accordingly. This method is not limited to construction; for marriage and funeral matters, one can also add a surname. In the case of marriage, since it is a significant matter for both men and women, both surnames must be included. Even those from the extreme north, who have no surname, must have a name; if the characters are not distinguished, then the numbers represent sounds. If there is no name, it follows the place of residence.

If the atmosphere at home remains as warm as spring, the family will thrive in harmony

At the same time, the Wang family is established, receiving the abundant energy of thunder and fire, transforming into the movement of Zhen, mutually interacting with Dui and Xun. Zhen, representing wood, serves as the foundation, while Li is the functional hexagram. Dui, as the mutual foundation, also restrains the foundation, which is quite critical. Although Li fire controls Dui metal, it is not entirely pure and beautiful. The use of fire dissipates the energy of the foundation, leading to financial depletion. Whenever there are fire-related months, days, or years, this matter is likely to arise, possibly resulting in losses due to women. The household also experiences many disputes involving women. In the years of Hai, Zi, Yin, and Mao, it indicates an increase in agricultural wealth. This is because Zhen wood serves as the foundation; although Kan is not visible, it ultimately signifies a favorable water year. The energy of the foundation is present, and although Zhen and Xun are not visible, encountering Yin and Mao indicates a favorable situation for the foundational hexagram. Whenever there is Zhen and Xun, along with the energy of wood in the years of Yin and Mao, this residence will surely achieve great success. It also indicates the strength of having a firstborn son, transforming into heavy Zhen. In the year 22, it will again be consumed by fire.

The tiles in front of the eaves, when the door falls, all matters are filled with sorrow and despair

The current of the flowing water moves towards the door, and wealth is forever difficult to gather

In the initial stages of observation and discernment, one can perceive the rise and fall of circumstances

In the early morning, the magpies chatter continuously, signaling the arrival of distant travelers

Chickens, pigs, cats, and dogs are tainted by foulness, poverty and illness invade each other

The openly exposed rat approaches the sun at noon, soon to deplete wealth and resources

The portal is refreshingly serene and free from dust, undoubtedly leading to exceptional talent

The divination of objects

This Song of the Cave and the Spiritual Response, though originating from the same source, exhibit slight differences. The former is largely concerned with divination and its interpretations, as it reflects the signs that emerge during the act of divination. This song, however, is not solely for the purpose of divination; it enters households at a particular moment, indicating that where there is an event, there must be a corresponding principle. It is primarily a reflection of observation. There are several aspects through which households can be warned and take precautions, or even turn misfortune into fortune. If one is unaware of the cause and is thus caught in the numbers, allowing me to perceive it, then good and evil will not escape clear discernment. The peach blossoms are vibrant by the gate near the well, within which the charm is tinged.

The Song of the Cave Mystic conveys profound and subtle teachings. This song is often inspired by the energies of a dwelling. In ancient times, Niu Sihui would enter people's homes and discern their auspicious and inauspicious signs, which is the essence of this practice. Therefore, the rise and fall of a household must be accompanied by omens and signs, as well as the recognition of texts and prophecies. Those who understand can discern, while those who do not remain ignorant. Thus, this song reveals its profound meanings, all of which are the inevitable principles; one must not view them with superficiality. In the world, all matters are fundamentally numerical, and the principles lie within. Auspiciousness and inauspiciousness, regret and loss have their mechanisms, and misfortunes and blessings can be foreseen. The Five Elements—Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, Earth—are primarily governed by their generative and restraining interactions; the five colors—Green, Yellow, Red, Black, White—must be clearly distinguished. When the roc calls at the door, calamity befalls the populace

The cooking smoke rises early during the three meals, and the family's fortunes gradually improve

The wall in front of the door is damaged, and the family's fortune is gradually declining

If a boat is safely on flat ground, it may still become stagnant despite its stability

There are tall parasol trees in front and behind the house, parting from the master of the house

The residence of the Han surname benefits from the transformation of Zhongfu. The Xun structure interacts with Gen and Kun, transforming and overcoming the original. This residence is bound to have legal disputes, observable in the year, month, and day of You. In the years of Shen and You, illnesses will frequently appear, and the favored hexagrams are those that harmonize with the Xun structure, which should be evident after the months of Yin and Mao. After the years of Shen and You, there will be misfortune. After thirty-one years, encountering the years of Shen and You, this residence is destined for destruction. Unless there is a Dui, or a Kan, after another thirty-one years, this residence will also remain unharmed.

The elderly weep without reason, soon to be seen in sorrow and grief

Often shattered at the side gate, unable to benefit the family lord

The female is difficult to summon at dawn, and the cries are heard; calamities befall those who are favored by others

The ancestral hall's deity suddenly ignites incense, fearing that fire calamities may be summoned

The entrance to the tea and fruit is met with a response, the central offering brings wealth to the main tomb.

The natural fragrance is like that of an orchid in the room, and blessings arrive without a single empty day

Family members appear disheveled and unkempt, their expressions reflecting sorrow and distress

Song of Observing Objects and Delving into Mysteries

How can one bear to see the fortunes and misfortunes of others? One can only judge from the mysteries within.

The principles of house divination

The intricacies of countless doors and households are difficult to detail, yet the principles reside within my heart.

If one sees a flock of sheep at the entrance, it indicates that the head of the household is afflicted by a plague.

The flock of sparrows competes fiercely at the door, and the tongues wag incessantly to settle the matter

The ghostly wails of a woman lament her feelings quietly, bringing calamity to the path of the shadows.

Both male and female adornments are well-arranged, and the door's style is splendid as one departs

It is not appropriate to light lamps during the day, as the deceased continue to pass away.

The cultured guide leads to innate understanding, delving deeply into the profound mysteries

Generally, when it comes to objects, one does not favor the appearance of the Dui hexagram, as Dui signifies destruction and fracture. If Kan is the main hexagram, then encountering Dui does not cause harm. Similarly, if Qian is the main hexagram, it is also harmless. For other hexagrams, encountering Dui will lead to imminent destruction. For wooden objects, if Zhen or Xun is the main hexagram, encountering Dui as a function will certainly not hinder their durability. The day of destruction for an object must coincide with the time of the divination, specifically the month and day of Shen or You. Furthermore, for livestock, it is also inadvisable for Qian or Dui to dominate. For cultivated plants, if Qian or Dui dominates, they will certainly fail; even if they succeed, there will still be misfortunes associated with the symbols of axes and halberds. For valuable crops, it is advisable to encounter Kan.

The stone masonry before the steps is much damaged, and many accomplishments have met with decline and destruction

At the edge of the well, a tall pear tree is planted, growing far from its native soil

When observing objects, if one wishes to know their creation and destruction, one should also examine the hexagram. If there is no overcoming, then it will endure for a long time. If the body encounters overcoming, it will not last long. By observing the energy and numerical values of the objects, those that can endure should be determined by the total number of years of the hexagram; those that cannot endure should be determined by the number of months; and those that will perish quickly should be determined by the number of days.

On the first day of the twelfth month in the Year of the Tiger, when one begins to build a house, the family name is Tian. The divination indicates a water well and a rising wind, leading to the sight of Li and Dui. The essence is represented by Xun wood, utilizing the hexagram Kan water for growth. Although Dui metal overcomes wood, there is still the presence of Li fire. Fire, despite lacking energy, ultimately restrains metal. However, with Dui metal present, there will also be concerns about losses in the month and day of You. In the month and day of Hai and Zi water, there will be gains, possibly wealth from the water's edge, as Kan generates the essence of Xun. The years of Yin and Mao will bring great satisfaction, as they are harmonious energies. Yet, the household will inevitably experience much chatter, also attributed to Dui. The years of Yin and Mao will bring great satisfaction, as they are harmonious energies. However, the household will inevitably experience much chatter, also attributed to Dui. The wood essence approaches spring. Happily encountering Kan water, this residence will surely thrive. After twenty-nine years, this house will be destroyed. The twenty-nine years represent the full cycle of the hexagram. If not for the presence of Dui in the center, even after seeing twenty-nine years, the house would remain intact.
