Chapter 005: Sheep Entering the Tiger's Den
One after another, all the busy and idle figures emerged, looking at the direct supervisor standing at the office door, furious.
In a moment of hesitation, Adrian was unable to speak up immediately, but he never expected to hear Kirk's voice behind him
Kirk gracefully bypassed Adrian and Stephen, stepped forward confidently, took out his business card, and handed it to Steve, seemingly preparing to formally introduce himself
But the key point is that he was not handcuffed, and his eager expression resembled that of a bystander passing by, with a relaxed brow and a calm demeanor
Steve was momentarily at a loss for words
Steve let out a gentle breath, "So, are you exercising your right to remain silent?"
Bang
He stood in the interrogation room, and given the unfamiliar faces, it was reasonable to conclude that he should be a criminal suspect
A figure stood behind Adrian and Stephen, towering half a head above them. With a tall and slender physique reminiscent of a model stepping onto a runway, this person exuded an air of calm and composure amidst the low pressure. Out of nowhere, they produced a bag of gummy bears and began to chew on them.
Steve controlled himself with an emergency brake, his expression serious, as he took the business card
Therefore, Kirk still needs to have a conversation with Steve. As a journalist, he should be able to bring some surprises
At least, it appears so on the surface
Kirk gently shrugged his shoulders, sighed, indicating his understanding, and met Steve's gaze with a dignified look, after which a smile gradually blossomed at the corners of his mouth
The circus performance has concluded, and the curiosity can be put to rest. Is there truly no work for anyone?
Adrian lowered his head, averted his gaze, and leaned against the door panel with some unease, yet ultimately did not speak up
Who told you about the message
This is not normal
Jeff Mingela
Adrian almost choked on his own saliva, what... ? ... what ?
Silence slowly spreads through the air; at the same time, tension and anxiety gradually erode the skin
All of Steve's last doubts vanished, and he made an inviting gesture, "Jeff, just in time, I hope to have an in-depth discussion with you. How about this, my office, please come in."
Steve resembled a mobile volcano, with smoke rising from his Mediterranean-like head. The wrinkles, akin to those of a pug, quivered slightly due to the surge of emotions. His gaze was piercing, sweeping across the entire room with sharpness, while a deep voice emerged from the depths of the cavern.
Inside, it is equally quiet
The entire venue was silent as a grave
Adrian's heart tightened at the sight of the book, "... reporter, are you sure?"
Adrian was momentarily taken aback
Initially, Steve had some reservations; how could a reporter from the New York Times possibly walk into a lion's den right after the front-page headline? However, upon witnessing the bold and somewhat provocative demeanor of the person before him, all doubts vanished, replaced instead by a raging fury
The implication is that Adrian did not disclose any secrets just now
Steve Gallagher, the highest leader of the Special Investigations Division of the NYPD
Gazing intently at Steve, leaning slightly forward as if preparing to launch an attack, yet halted just at the moment of confrontation
At the first glance, a profound impression was already etched in Kirk's mind
A hint of a smile appeared in Kirk's eyes, "Commander, you know I won't say anything to you. In fact, I would like to ask you a few things."
Instinctively, Steve wanted to throw the reporter in front of him out, but an alarm went off in his mind. His recent performance had already caught the reporter's attention, and with the front-page headline of the New York Times, if the reporter were to leave just like that, the subsequent events would spiral out of control
Steve has already found a way to calm down, at least for the time being. It seems somewhat absurd to watch Kirk in front of him searching for a suitable sitting posture
Grass! Grass! Grass!
Wherever Steve's gaze fell, a sense of low pressure could be felt, and the tension quietly spread.
It is utterly absurd, yet it seems almost natural when it happens to Kirk
"Adrian, who is in the interrogation room?" Steve asked directly.
Adrian ultimately could not hold back
Grass
I am attempting to interview two detectives to see their views on the homeless case
In fact, the word "Kirk" was already on the tip of his tongue, but in the end, he unknowingly swallowed it down, and Adrian himself did not understand what was happening to him
Calm down
That murky voice, which seems to have a thick phlegm lodged deep in the throat that is neither cleared nor intended to be cleared, is highly recognizable; even with my eyes closed, I would not mistake it.
Who
Clearly, Deputy Senior Inspector Steve Gallagher was extremely angry, even cursing in public.
I will kill you all, I am serious, I will kill you one by one, just like crushing ants. Damn!
With each word pronounced slowly and with gritted teeth
With his right hand, he slowly took out two wet wipes and meticulously wiped his hands, which were not dirty at all, as if he were cleaning the facade of a business
Steve scrutinized the young man before him and said, "You know I won't tell you anything."
Who leaked information to the 'Times'?
With a loud shout, the crowd dispersed in an uproar, and in the blink of an eye, tranquility was restored
Jeff Mingela, The New York Times, Editor-in-Chief
Kirk turned around and displayed a smile at Adrian, "Detective Adrian, are you finally ready to answer my questions now?"
Kirk appeared as if he had no bones, languidly slumped in the chair, his mind involuntarily conjuring the image of a melting goblin; his chestnut brown short hair was slightly tousled and curled, his narrow eyes seemed to be still waking up, exuding an air of laziness and nonchalance.
Today, how could Kirk approach the police station without any preparation
Adrian was put in a difficult position. How should he respond? A private detective? And then what? Digging a pit to bury himself, getting entangled in the doubts of leaking information?
Kirk
Come out! All of you brats, get out here right now
As Kirk followed Steve into the office and closed the door, a rustling commotion began to spread, with curious gazes directed towards Adrian and the office. No one spoke, nor did anyone condemn; all discussions were concealed beneath the calm surface.
For a moment, Steve was somewhat uncertain about the identity of the person before him
Moreover
Kirk noticed Adrian and Stephen exchanging a quick glance, and although he had only seen their photos, he immediately recognized them in person
Steve was also taken aback, completely unprepared for the unexpected answer, which caught him off guard.
In the next moment, Kirk, who received no response, spread his hands in a gesture of regret, turned around, and followed in Steve's footsteps, heading towards the office.
Adrian glanced at the business card... Is it not the one he just received?
Puff
After a brief conversation with Adrian, Kirk was able to discern that the police department had a vague awareness of the anomalies, yet they did not pursue further investigation. The reason for this likely lies with their superiors, as investigations were shelved for various reasons and under different circumstances
Oh
The confrontation and stalemate generated an incredible and intense spark, almost overflowing.
However, there is one exception
Kirk is providing cover for Adrian
Adrian turned his head towards the office with a look of deep concern
However, it is precisely those whispers and murmurs that are even more distressing.
Kirk raised his eyebrows slightly, his face full of nonchalance, "Sir, may I ask if I have been arrested? Is this a formal investigation? Do I need to hire a lawyer?"
