He ordered Sun Fu, the Deputy Minister of the Privy Council, to concurrently serve as the Crown Prince's Tutor, and Xie Kejia, the Deputy Minister of Personnel, to concurrently serve as the Crown Prince's Guest, assisting the Crown Prince in governing the state and managing affairs of the court. Soon after, the Jin people ordered the two emperors, Huizong and Qinzong, to instruct the Crown Prince to leave the city. The commander Wu Gelili requested the Crown Prince to stay, intending to use the recruited warriors in disguise to protect the Crown Prince and break through the siege. Sun Fu did not allow this, and instead plotted to hide among the common people, killing two individuals who resembled the Crown Prince and the court official, and sending them to the Jin people. After five days of hesitation, Wu Kai and Mo Chou pressed urgently, and Fan Qiong feared a change, using alarming words to intimidate the guards. After five days of hesitation, Wu Kai and Mo Chou pressed urgently, and Fan Qiong feared a change, using alarming words to intimidate the guards, and took the Crown Prince and the Empress in the same carriage to the Jin camp. The officials and military officers rushed to follow, crying out in grief. The students crowded around the carriage, and the Crown Prince shouted, "Common people, save me!" The cries shook the heavens, and they then headed north. Zhao Chen (Chen, pronounced the same as 'morning'), the eldest son of Emperor Qinzong Zhao Huan, was born of Empress Zhu. He was born in the seventh year of Zhenghe (117 years), and was the legitimate grandson of Emperor Huizong. Since the founding of the Song dynasty, there had not been a legitimate grandson of the reigning emperor, which greatly pleased Huizong. Cai Jing petitioned to appoint the imperial grandson as the Acting Minister of State and the Military Governor of Changde, and to confer upon him the title of Duke of Chongguo, to which Huizong agreed. Wang Fu assisted in governance, plotting to seize power from Cai Jing, claiming that Cai Jing regarded the Crown Prince of the Eastern Palace as the emperor, thus demoting Zhao Chen to the Defense Minister of Gaozhou. In the first year of Jingkang (1126), Emperor Qinzong ascended the throne, promoting Zhao Chen to Acting Minister of State, Military Governor of Zhaoqing, and Prince of Daming. He was further promoted to Acting Crown Prince Tutor and Military Governor of Ningguo. In April, he was officially established as the Crown Prince.
