During the Hongwu period, the imperial examination was not conducted for a time; however, the scrutiny of officials was extremely rigorous, leading to numerous cases of dereliction of duty resulting in death, which inevitably raised concerns about a lack of succession. Therefore, the Hongwu Emperor extensively selected students from the Imperial Academy to assume various official positions and handle various administrative tasks, such as land measurement and the construction of water conservancy facilities. The selection of students for the Military Academy was, like that of the Imperial Academy, naturally very strict—because they were the hope for the future of the Ming Dynasty. The Military Academy, the highest military institution of the Ming Dynasty, is purely fictional. The basis for this fiction is the Imperial Academy of the Hongwu period. Now, in terms of military matters, one might assume that the Hongwu Emperor was very likely to establish a similar national academy, specifically to cultivate young officers who were both loyal (having grown up in the new era of the new dynasty) and vibrant, to fill the numerous vacancies after the great purge.
