Chapter 4: Guests Arrive at the Peach Leaf Ferry
The man with eagle-like eyes smiled and said, "Let her go, or I will strangle you, girl." With a firm grip of his fingers, Su Lili immediately found it hard to breathe, her face flushed and veins bulging, as she glared at Qi Fengxiang
Qi Fengxiang relaxed his grip, and the woman in white fainted in his arms. However, Qi Fengxiang held her close and asked, "Who are you?"
Qi Fengxiang gazed at her for a moment, his eyes narrowing, just as he was about to speak, Master Zhang called from the doorway, "Young Master, come out for a moment." Qi Fengxiang glanced over but continued to finish his sentence, saying, "While white water has its benefits, the tea I brewed for you is safe to drink." After saying this, he stood up and went outside to whisper with Master Zhang in the corridor
Qi Fengxiang nodded, "That is acceptable, but what you have removed yourself does not count."
This ... ... Young Master is indeed wise, it is that person who taught me to say this, but ... ... he does not allow me to say it.
This damned tone! Su Lili cursed inwardly with resentment, each moment feeling as painful as a thousand years, yet she noticed that the sky was gradually darkening, making it difficult to see the scenery ahead. As her vision blurred, her throat loosened under the grip of five fingers, and she slipped, feeling as if her throat had shattered. She collapsed to the ground and coughed for a long time, a metallic sweetness lingering in her throat
Su Lili couldn't help but smile slightly and replied, "In the face of great festivals, when families gather, Young Master Qi seems to appear rather lonely." Qi Fengxiang nodded, "Sometimes, the closer the family, the more estranged they become. The more familiar the acquaintances, the more distant they feel. Every word and laugh is weighed with consideration; it is better to find someone less familiar, as one can converse more openly and interestingly."
Su Lili felt a tightness in her back, and her body flew away in a state of emptiness, her limbs awkwardly landing in Qi Fengxiang's embrace. Qi Fengxiang held her and said to that "Ouyang Tan": "Your Excellency, your hawk-like gaze and wolf-like demeanor are not those of an ordinary person. Today, the world has lost its deer, and the heroes pursue it. If we are to be opponents in the future, let us determine the outcome then"
Su Lili suddenly said: "Wait a moment."
Qi Fengxiang lifted his robe and sat down, saying: "The tea soup from Liu'an is bright green in color and has a high, clear fragrance. It is indeed Master Zhang's favorite, but I do not like it."
At dawn, the rare sunlight streamed into the courtyard. Su Lili twisted a towel, and water dripped softly into the basin. She knelt on the ground, unfolding the towel to carefully wipe Uncle Cheng's frail hands. These hands had supported her through many years of wind and rain, never leaving her side. Yu Fei squatted nearby, silently keeping her company.
That Master Fang showed great respect towards Qi Fengxiang and replied, "It is no trouble at all; we are accustomed to being on the water, and those few individuals can be easily shaken off."
The leader in black whistled, and a group of people rushed upstream to intercept and kill the boat.
When one faces unfamiliar scenery, it is easy to express a sigh. As Su Lili was quietly sighing, Qi Fengxiang entered with a kettle of water and placed it on the table for her. "Miss Su, why are you sighing?" Seeing him preparing to brew tea, Su Lili hurriedly stood up. Not wanting to take the kettle from his hands, she could only stand aside and stammer, "Isn't this Liu'an Guapian genuine? There are many fakes on the market now. But why haven't I seen you drink any on the way?"
Su Lili gently touched her cheek and nodded
Su Lili always thought that she was the only one who spoke to coffins, but unexpectedly, Qi Fengxiang also benefited from the silence's depth. Su Lili silently examined a thin-skinned coffin not far away. Due to the renovation of the shop, the previously stored wood was now scarce, leaving the courtyard much more spacious.
Wang Meng agreed and went to wait. Master Zhang skillfully introduced, "To the southwest of Taiping Prefecture, there are homes surrounded by green bamboo and yellow fences, which is precisely the bustling Peach Blossom Spring known as Su Yuan. The owner of Su Yuan is Ouyang Tan, a renowned scholar from northern Jibei. In his early years, Ouyang Tan roamed the rivers and lakes, displaying a certain chivalry. Later, he devoted himself to learning, though it is unknown whom he studied under. He repeatedly failed in his pursuit of fame and success, and ultimately established this Su Yuan in the bustling market of Taiping Prefecture, taking its name to imply a sense of aspiration, and he prides himself on being quite distinguished."
Three people walked down to the lobby, where a few individuals were sparsely seated, all appearing to be wanderers from the rivers and lakes. Due to the unrest in the world, some were even armed with swords and knives. Qi Fengxiang did not pay attention to those people; he simply sat at a table and began to eat. Su Lili glanced around but was captivated by a burly man with a thick beard in the corner.
Note: The lyrics sung by the burly man with a long beard are adapted from Li Qi's poem "Sending Off Chen Zhangfu." I did not write the poem of the woman in white correctly; the character "急" does not rhyme, and the entire poem does not adhere to the rules.
Another day has passed, and in the streets and alleys, the public notice issued by Young Master Ying has been replaced by an imperial edict, posthumously designating the deceased emperor as the "Li" Emperor. The common people openly call him a foolish monarch. The entire clan of the foolish monarch has been exterminated by Grand Tutor Bao Hui, leaving only an eight-year-old child who escaped and was then proclaimed as the emperor, initiating a new era.
The woman in white had a slight smile at the corners of her eyes and brows: "How long have we been walking?"
Qi Fengxiang, in a state of amusement, exclaimed loudly: "Ha, splendid! You exert one part of your strength, and I will exert one part of mine; let us see who runs out of breath first." The pale face of the woman in white in his hand suddenly flushed red.
Look at his hands; they have been broken by someone. His ribs have also been fractured, and his leg bones cannot be straightened. Su Lili gently brushed Uncle Cheng's hand, saying, "Only his head and face are intact. Tell me, what is the purpose of others humiliating him like this? What are they trying to force him to reveal? What do they want to know?"
No
Upon waking, I felt a sense of disorientation, still aboard the boat, which had already reached the northern shore. The cabin was cramped, and Master Zhang leaned against the wall to rest. As the boat swayed, Qi Fengxiang entered from outside and said: "Everyone, get up. We are now in the territory of Taiping Prefecture, so we must proceed with caution."
Qi Fengxiang poured himself another cup of wine and said: "I have thought for half a day and believe this place is the best. I just arrived, and indeed it is very good"
Su Lili was indeed struggling to keep up with his train of thought. "Wait, what are you going to do? Oh no, no, no, you don't have to tell me, but what do you want me to do?"
On the eve of the Lunar New Year, the fortunes remain unchanged, yet the court's policies have shifted. In order to demonstrate a fresh atmosphere, Qi Huancheng, under the decree of the young emperor, arranged for lanterns to be displayed throughout the city and set off fireworks, celebrating with the people. Su Lili, filled with enthusiasm, decided to take a look. Although the lanterns surpassed those of the Qixi Festival, they lacked the warmth of its sentiment.
The east wind miscalculates the flowering period, while the river water rushes with the tide.
The burly man was greatly excited upon seeing him, and just as he was about to speak after cupping his fist in salute, Qi Fengxiang decisively said, "Come with me!" He turned around and waved for Su Lili to come out, while rushing downstream. Su Lili quickly crawled out of the grass cage and followed him. Qi Fengxiang still grabbed her collar, moving swiftly as if flying.
The burly man was taken aback, pointing at the water's surface and saying: "Sha... Sha... Shahe Gang?"
Qi Fengxiang said with a faint smile: "I said not a single hair of yours is missing, but I didn't specify whether it is dead or alive"
The two individuals pulled aside the grass curtain to see that it was the burly man with a twisted beard from the evening, blocking the path of the group of men in black, brandishing his sword. The men in black did not respond, and three of them launched an attack against him. The man's martial skills were clearly more effective than his intellect; his swordplay was bold and sweeping, effortlessly fending off their strikes. Meanwhile, the remaining ten or so men in black disregarded him and continued upstream.
Su Lili silently savored the taste of tea, feeling puzzled by the *illustration* book. How could Qi Fengxiang seem to possess the ability to read minds, effortlessly grasping her intentions? Bai Shui easily detected whether there was poison, could it be that he had been poisoned? She had unwittingly added a comment, bringing up the deeper meaning of his words. She secretly admonished herself to play the fool in the future and to avoid deepening her relationship with Qi Fengxiang
Master Zhang laughed and said: "The old man is already in the twilight of his years; use him when needed. If it were thirty years earlier, he would still have some ambition, but now he is merely a hired hand for the young master. There is no need for empty praise"
Su Lili cast a faint glance at them and said, "Master Zhang has arrived, take a look at Uncle Cheng, I am about to close the coffin." Upon hearing this, Master Zhang quickly stepped forward and leaned over the coffin, asking, "How is Old Cheng...?"
Qi Fengxiang clasped his hands and said, "I am a merchant from Youzhou, passing through this area, and I have come specifically to pay my respects to Mr. Ouyang"
The chicken was startled and was about to flap its wings. Qi Fengxiang spread his five fingers, and with a flick of his hand, a hidden weapon was unleashed, producing a faint dull sound. Instantly, a flock of chickens crouched down and remained still. Qi Fengxiang gestured for Su Lili to stay right there and not to move, then turned and disappeared into the night.
Su Lili leaned against Uncle Cheng's coffin and said coldly: "Since you are a member of the Qi family, advising him to choose a master in chaotic times is nothing but urging him to return to the Qi clan, right? Accompanying him to Qiyun Temple for leisure is merely taking him to meet Qi Fengxiang, isn't it?"
Su Lili found his words frivolous and detestable. With a glare, she angrily exclaimed, "Marry someone! I have a house, a career, and food and drink. Why should I!"
Su Lili couldn't help but chuckle when he mentioned what she had said in the past. She affirmed without a doubt, "I am a petty person. Petty people are just this mundane!"
As the two individuals ascended the stairs, one of them suddenly struck the table with chopsticks, producing a resonant sound, and sang: "In April, the southern wind brings the barley to ripeness, while the jujube flowers have yet to fall and the paulownia leaves grow. The green mountains are seen in the morning and again in the evening, as the neighing horse departs, longing for its old hometown. At the east gate, I drink wine with my companions, my heart light as if amidst the vast wilderness. I have stored ten thousand volumes of books within me, unwilling to bow my head in the grasslands."
The others scattered to search, using the flickering light of the fire for cover. One person pointed towards the water, saying, "There is a boat over there, heading to the opposite shore"
Su Lili grasped the edge of the coffin, fell silent for a moment, then turned to look at Yu Fei. Yu Fei shook his head and hid behind her, saying: "I won't leave, Sister Su."
Su Lili slammed the table and resolutely declared: "Indeed! I still have a coffin shop. I will make coffins and sell coffins!"
Upon her first encounter with Qi Fengxiang, Su Lili became like a mouse facing a cat, and upon their next meeting, she could not help but flee in panic. She only managed to regain a small measure of confidence at the Fu Gui Building, yet she had never so boldly uttered coarse words from the streets.
She suddenly recalled that on her birthday during the Qixi Festival, Qi Fengxiang stood on the stone bridge over the moat, gazing at the undulating city walls. Three months later, he would march into the capital, bow drawn and troops ready. Now, as he stands by the Weishui River looking into the distance, could it be that he harbors intentions of encroaching upon northern Jibei? But why would he risk such danger alone, putting even this nameless pawn at stake?
*
Su Lili suddenly turned around, and there stood a woman in white in front of the bamboo house. She appeared to be no older than thirty, with a frail appearance due to illness. Her long hair was simply tied up, and the thick cotton coat she wore did not make her look bulky. She smiled gently at Su Lili, her gaze soft. Su Lili stood up, holding the silk cloth, and asked, "Who are you?"
Do you know the residence of this person
As soon as she finished speaking, a voice from the shore shouted, "Who are you? How dare you kill the esteemed guest at the inn!"
On the mossy path, Ouyang Tan met Qi Fengxiang's narrow eyes. Qi Fengxiang had one arm firmly wrapped around the neck of the woman in white. The woman in white seemed completely unconcerned, gazing at the plum blossoms on the branches, resignedly allowing him to hold her.
Ouyang Tan twisted Su Lili's arm and said: "You and I have nothing to do with each other. I will let her pass, you let her come over."
Ah? Su Lili felt faint; this treacherous scoundrel had deceived her and then explained it in this manner. She was immediately filled with despair, secretly cursing Qi Fengxiang's ancestors for eighteen generations. Just as she reached the seventeenth generation in her curses, she was persuaded to stop by Zhou Gong.
Qi Fengxiang gently traced the rim of the white porcelain cup, lost in thought, and murmured, "How about this? You currently have no timber and cannot make a coffin, so come with me to Jizhou. Next month, timber for the renovation of the palace will be transported to the capital, and I will arrange for a batch for you." Seeing Su Lili hesitating, he added, "On this trip, you won't have to kill or set fire, you won't have to resort to deceit or trickery, and you won't have to risk your life. I will bring you back, not a single hair will be harmed, is that acceptable?"
Three days later, Su Lili wrote a letter and placed it on the wooden pillow. After some thought, she took it out again and pinned it to a prominent post in the courtyard. As she reached the door, she couldn't help but turn back, adjusted the cinnabar color, and wrote eight slanted and uneven large characters on the main door—"Temporarily away for matters, returning in March"
What is good here? Young Master Qi, a man of battle, is not afraid of misfortune
He slightly turned his head to Su Lili and said, "Wait here." He then took Master Zhang inside by himself
The man lowered his head, with beef and liquor laid out in front of him. From time to time, he took a sip, not in a hurry, as if he were waiting for someone. Su Lili had been watching him when suddenly he raised his head, his gaze piercing like a knife directed at her. She quickly turned her head back and finished her meal. Outside, the snow had stopped. Qi Fengxiang pointed with his finger, "You, come out for a walk with me"
Su Lili pointed to the black lacquer coffin under the eaves and said, "That is the coffin you requested, take it away."
Su Lili clinked her cup with his and said, "I also wish you get what you desire"
Qi Fengxiang said: "Very well, then when we arrive in Weibei, you will take me to his residence. You have not said anything at all"
"Jizhou? Whose place is that?" Su Lili asked in surprise.
The burly man suddenly knelt and said: "I am Wang Meng, a grass thief from this mountain. I have heard that Young Master Qi is generous and befriends people from all over the world, so I wish to seek refuge with him"
Su Lili, fully aware that there was no hint of mockery in her words, could not help but blush. She stammered, "No... it's not that... it's just..." After pondering for a long time, she felt that explaining her relationship with Mu Tou was difficult, so she could only say softly, "He has left and I don't know when he will return."
Su Lili remained silent, neither trusting nor doubting, only pondering the true intentions of his visit today. Qi Fengxiang no longer argued, drained his cup of wine, poured another, and smiled with a hint of coldness: "Miss Su, you need not worry; I am neither a demon nor a ghost, and I have not come here to cause trouble today"
A thick cotton coat was thrown over, and Su Lili picked it up to take a look. Qi Fengxiang remarked sarcastically, "Put it on, Boss Su. If you freeze to death, someone will still have to 'carry your body back home.'"
Upon returning home, I crossed through the backyard to the inner courtyard of the shop. I saw an empty courtyard, with a solitary lamp illuminating the space. A person sat on a bamboo stool, dressed in wide-sleeved white garments, appearing ethereal like a celestial being. In front of him, on a small table, was a white porcelain wine jar. Upon seeing Su Lili return, Qi Fengxiang raised his cup and recited: "In the winter's chill, solitude prevails, firecrackers add to the clamor. Toasts and well-wishes exchanged over wine, fireworks bloom outside the window. The banquet and the joy of literature have reached their end, the crescent moon tilts to the west. How much can one truly experience in life, and how can fleeting years be boasted about?" (Note)
Qi Fengxiang said: "Then you go wait at that tea house, I will see him and come back."
Ouyang Qinying's gaze fixed intently, his grip on Su Lili's hand slightly relaxed, and he said: "You are not a merchant from Youzhou"
Su Lili stood there in a daze as Qi Fengxiang pulled her wrist and walked back, saying with a smile: "You sometimes look so blank that it leaves people speechless, yet you seem to understand things quite well. It's better to head back and rest early." The two returned to the main hall, where the diners had all left, but the burly man with the thick beard was still sitting there, engrossed in pouring wine.
Taiping Prefecture is a major city in Jizhou, prosperous and flourishing. Three individuals disembarked, and Wang Meng was already waiting on the shore. The group abandoned their carriages and walked forward, meandering through the bustling market until they found themselves in a narrow alley. At the end of the alley was a bamboo fence, and Wang Meng stopped, saying: "That gentleman lives inside. I was wanted by the authorities and escaped to his courtyard. He offered me some advice. I initially intended to follow him, but he said he did not need me and directed me to seek out Young Master Qi. He showed me the young master's portrait, and when I saw you at Taoye Ferry, I recognized you." Wang Meng stopped, saying: "That gentleman lives inside. I was wanted by the authorities and escaped to his courtyard. He offered me some advice. I initially intended to follow him, but he said he did not need me and directed me to seek out Young Master Qi. He showed me the young master's portrait, and when I saw you at Taoye Ferry, I recognized you."
The woman in white was taken aback, "I have never been out, so I do not know how to get there"
Master Zhang spoke to me about the events of that day
Qi Fengxiang set down his cup, feeling somewhat displeased and slightly tipsy, and said: "We have known each other for nearly two years, yet we have only met four times. Today is New Year's Eve; why not have a drink, just this one drink."
Qi Fengxiang said: "Currently, the garrison of Jizhou, Chen Beiguang, is occupying the area. He is allied with Yan and Yun, possessing strong troops and horses. Our strength is inferior, and we are in alliance with him. Therefore, I can only go quietly."
Su Lili softly and ethereally said: "Look at me? What is there to see? Master Zhang, won't you come and take a look at Uncle Cheng? See how he was tortured to death?" She reached out to grasp Uncle Cheng's hand, but it was so stiff that she could not move it. Faintly, the nails appeared bluish-gray, and the skin bore a purplish hue.
Qi Fengxiang watched the few people fighting, his expression shifting from surprise to displeasure, his mood fluctuating. The four of them were entangled here, preventing Su Lili and Qi Fengxiang from leaving. Su Lili only felt a gust of wind beside her, and Qi Fengxiang had already stepped into the fray, swiftly disarming and knocking down a man in black. With a quick motion, he struck again, severing another's throat, but it was still a moment too late. The remaining person launched a bright red flare into the sky, and then fell under Qi Fengxiang's blade.
Master Zhang said: "It is not without danger for you to be here, why not ... ... "
Master Zhang shook his head and said, "I am not sure about this either. He seems to be an old acquaintance of Young Master Qi, and they indeed had a long private discussion at Qiyun Temple, but I do not know what they talked about." He then changed the subject and said, "Since Young Master Qi has taken over the capital, he has many official matters to attend to. Lord Qi's rear army will also be arriving shortly, and he is unable to leave, so he asked me to come here and said he would visit you when he has the time."
After a moment, Qi Fengxiang turned around, reached out to catch her, and leaped over the inn's wall, running to the left. He arrived at a patch of grass and threw Su Lili inside, hiding himself there as well. The two of them lay in the grass, and Su Lili couldn't help but grab his arm to speak. Qi Fengxiang raised a finger to signal her to be quiet, indicating for her to look in the direction of the inn.
Qi Fengxiang nodded and said: "It is the Shahe Gang, and who are you?"
The woman in this poem remains steadfast for ten years, yet only gains a fleeting moment like floating duckweed. She has not promised a lifelong commitment, so what can she truly obtain? It is likely that time passes swiftly, and days slip away in haste. In a moment of obsession, she can only think of how today differs from yesterday, holding the silk cloth and shedding tears. Unbeknownst to her, someone behind her lets out a soft sigh.
The second floor of the inn, which had just been silent moments ago, was now ablaze, with the fire originating from the very room occupied by the three of them. In the dry winter air, the wooden floorboards ignited with the slightest spark. The wind fanned the flames, and with the addition of some oil, saltpeter, and phosphorus, the fire roared to life, creating a fierce heat that could be felt even from a distance.
Is it in Weibei
At that moment, a thought arose, and for ten years it remained unwavering
Yes
Su Lili also felt that this courtyard was strange and just wanted to leave quickly. She hurriedly responded and started to walk back. After taking a couple of steps, she suddenly turned back and said: "Sister, please forgive me, I have lost my way and do not know how to get out. I kindly ask you to show me the way."
Suddenly, he invited, "Miss Su, since you have been free lately, would you accompany me on a trip to Jizhou?"
The burly man stood up and exclaimed, "Hey—refusing to bow down in the wilderness!"
That afternoon, outside the North Gate, Qi Huancheng's tens of thousands of troops arrived in the capital; on Huangyang Ridge, Su Lili silently dug a nine-foot deep pit and, together with Master Zhang, buried Uncle Cheng. At the moment the coffin was lowered into the grave, dust swirled, stirring up memories of the past. Su Lili burned paper and offered wine, returning in silence all the way.
Wang Meng shook his head repeatedly and said: "There is none, there is none. I have been a bandit alone for many years, yet I have been running around like a headless fly. I would rather join the young master's army to serve, to fight in battles, to take the lead in danger, with no other demands."
Qi Fengxiang nodded slightly and smiled leisurely: "You are not Ouyang Tan either"
Su Lili gazed at him, her eyes distinctly black and white, carrying a fragile innocence, untouched by her father's brutal nature. Yu Fei timidly asked, "Sister Su, why are you looking at me?" Su Lili supported herself on the edge of the coffin, turned to Uncle Cheng, and softly said, "When my father died, I was about your age. I lifted his feet while Uncle Cheng lifted his head... just like we are doing today... placing him into the coffin"
Su Lili remained silent
Wang Meng hesitated and let out a sound of "Ah"
Since he has brought it up to this extent, Su Lili had no grounds for criticism and could not help but say, "Let us first discuss the material, quality, and quantity of the wood..."
Su Lili laughed so hard in her room that she nearly fell over. This person must know Qi Fengxiang's identity and wants to recommend himself, but his recommendation is utterly inappropriate. He claims to have 'ten thousand volumes of books stored in his mind,' but I fear the last phrase 'damn it' is his true self. Su Lili found a thin garment, put it on under her outer clothing for warmth, which was better than nothing. She blew out the lamp, hugged her bundle, and, following Qi Fengxiang's advice, got into bed fully clothed, snuggling under the covers, yet she did not close her eyes.
I just want to know where he is
Su Liliqi said: "Well... that would be quite vulgar. Isn't it the case that the official class has always regarded commoners as mere rough talents?"
Su Lili observed his harmless smile and felt that Qi Fengxiang had already begun to adopt a defensive stance with hostility
Qi Fengxiang's eyes resembled a leopard in the dark of night, fierce yet elegant, as he returned the greeting with a smile, saying: "It has been two years since we last met, and Master Fang is still so formal. I hope the brothers upstream are doing well"
Qi Fengxiang squinted his eyes as he poured her a drink, raising his glass and saying: "May your coffin shop prosper and bring in abundant wealth"
Su Lili's expression was hard to define. After taking a sip of tea, she seemed to sigh lightly and said, "Indeed, plain water has its own advantages"
Su Lili wrapped her clothes in her outer garment and saw that he was still thinking about her clothing list. She felt grateful and smiled, saying, "You said not a single hair would be missing."
Qi Fengxiang pointed at Su Lili with his gaze and laughed in response: "She is not my concubine either"
Upon hearing this, Qi Fengxiang was taken aback, and he froze while holding the cup. After a long pause, he sincerely sighed, "This... indeed makes it somewhat difficult to marry."
Su Lili tugged at his sleeve and turned his head back to face her. Yu Fei suddenly said, "Father was like this back then too." Su Lili abruptly turned to look at him, "What did you say?" He appeared somewhat dazed and frightened, saying, "Father and the Crown Prince were lying like this in the Fragrant Hall that day, and no one cared."
The shadows of the earthen walls linger gracefully, while the breeze gently stirs the bamboo tips
Hearing the voice of an old friend, I cover my sleeves and follow the steps away
Ouyang Tan turned his attention upon hearing the voice, nodded slightly, and said: "Likewise, see you again."
Master Fang repeatedly waved his hand, saying, "Young Master, you are too courteous, too courteous. I will certainly convey your message to the leader. If you have any further instructions, please do not hesitate to let me know; if not, I shall return to the hall. Wishing you a safe journey."
Willing to exchange the promise of growing old together for the fleeting gathering of floating duckweed
Su Lili looked at Master Zhang, who shook his head. She then crouched down and said to Yu Fei, "You go ahead. Don't be afraid; you cannot escape the matters of the world. Fear is useless, so why should you be afraid?" The wooden figure said that fear is indeed useless, so why should you be afraid; the only thing that can defeat us in this world is ourselves. Upon this thought, she unexpectedly broke into a gentle smile and brought Yu Fei in front of Master Zhang.
Master Zhang looked up in surprise at her expression, which was an indescribable calm. He pondered and said, "How does the young master know that we are here to carry the coffin"
Qi Fengxiang sat in the car outside, watching her busily scurry about like an ant, finding it quite amusing. When Su Lili got into the car with her bag, he teased, "Boss Su's business is indeed thriving; she can't be away for even a moment. Even before leaving, she seems eager to return." Su Lili ignored him and simply sat in the car, helping herself to his Liu'an Guapian tea.
I am unaware due to my old age
Qi Fengxiang said: "Brother Wang, if you wish to support me, do you have any requests?"
Su Lili observed his composed and gracious demeanor, momentarily unable to discern who was the host and who was the guest, and walked over to sit in front of him. Qi Fengxiang filled the cup opposite her and raised it, saying: "I toast to you"
Indeed, at the second watch of the night, as the window creaked, Su Lili suddenly sat up. Qi Fengxiang was instantly at her side, pressing a hand on her shoulder, signaling her to be silent. He then tucked her under his arm and leaped out of the window. Su Lili felt a moment of weightlessness, and as her feet hit the ground, she stumbled. Qi Fengxiang took the opportunity to let her down onto the ground. Su Lili landed on her backside, right next to a chicken coop.
The downstairs fell silent for a moment, and I heard the person below lamenting: "Damn that guy."
The woman smiled faintly and said, "You are in front of my house." Her voice was soft and slightly hoarse
Su Lili, however, could not feel at ease at all, and with a苦脸 said: "Can I say I won't go?"
Qi Fengxiang's long fingers rested on his knee as he asked in a cultured manner, "Who sent you to approach me?"
Su Lili smiled and dismissed the matter as if she were unaware of it. She hired someone else to renovate the shop, continuing to live as before. She simply removed the threshold of Su's coffin shop, turning it into a large opening, leaving others puzzled about her intentions. In her spare time, she practiced with the wooden sword, which she referred to as a common item from the marketplace. Although her technique was still somewhat mixed, it felt much more natural than before. At night, she would sleep with that sword in her arms, as if it gave her a bit more confidence.
Qi Fengxiang said lightly: "I do not like drinking tea, I only drink plain water"
Su Lili was instantly dumbfounded, thinking that Qi Fengxiang must look too much like a flower thief, which aroused this person's suspicion. Unable to catch her breath, she wanted to struggle but found herself completely powerless. Just as she was flailing her arms and legs, she suddenly heard someone behind her laughing: "Ouyang, you are truly ruthless; do you not understand the concept of cherishing beauty?"
In the moment when Ouyang Tan turned to enter the house, he suddenly glanced back at Su Lili, causing her heart to skip a beat. The door of the thatched cottage had already closed. Should she wait here? Su Lili was uncertain whether Qi Fengxiang had asked her to leave first. If this were a trap, if that Wang Meng was not as simple as he appeared... It would be better to leave early. She hesitated and stepped sideways, retreating towards the path she had come from.
Master Zhang displayed a look of appreciation and calmly said: "The wood has its own plans, and my shallow words cannot sway it."
The woman in white, however, no longer smiled. With a soft sigh, she said, "Three months is long enough." She turned to Su Lili and slowly continued, "I have not spoken to anyone for a long time. Since you can shed tears over these verses, I will give you this silk cloth. The person you are waiting for will eventually return, so cherish it well, lest you find yourself picking branches in vain when there are no flowers."
Su Lili felt a pang of pity for her, seeing her gravely ill, fearing that she would soon wither like this flower, leaving only empty branches behind when sought again. She lowered her head to glance at the handkerchief, as if she could sense the woman's utter despair, folded it twice, and tucked it into her bosom. As she raised her head, she suddenly bumped into someone, startled; it was Ouyang Tan. Wasn't he ahead with Qi Fengxiang?
*
Qi Fengxiang further stated: "It is the person who taught you to recite 'unwilling to bow down in the grass and weeds.'"
Before Su Lili could even speak, Ouyang Tan had already extended his fingers, forming a grip around her throat, his eyes filled with murderous intent. He coldly laughed and said, "Little girl, who sent you to see her? Was it your young master?"
Su Lili hesitated slightly, then picked up her cup and took a sip, only to find the wine rich and fragrant. Qi Fengxiang smiled, tilted his head back to finish his drink, and then looked her up and down. He noticed her brows were relaxed, her eyes were bright and intelligent, her cheeks a soft white, and her pointed chin added a touch of elegance. Her expression showed no trace of sorrow, only a slight increase in her silence compared to before, prompting him to praise, "Not only is the young lady intelligent, but she also possesses considerable resilience."
Qi Fengxiang shook his head: "The coffin is not ominous; rather, it allows one to contemplate life and death. When you were not back earlier, I had quite an engaging conversation with your coffin."
A knock sounded on the door, and Qi Fengxiang stood at the entrance saying: "Come down for dinner"
Su Lili, disregarding his sarcastic tone, stated directly: "This is not certain either; it can be done occasionally under certain conditions."
His eyes followed the figures of the two as they moved from downstairs to upstairs. Qi Fengxiang pushed open Su Lili's door without glancing aside, as if he had not heard the lyrics sung by that person, and with one hand, he ushered Su Lili into the room. Unable to contain her laughter, Su Lili deliberately said loudly: "Young Master, the lyrics sung by that person have quite a character."
"Then what tea do you like to drink?" Su Lili did not dare to trouble him to serve another cup of tea and hurriedly brought it over herself
Su Lili raised her chin and said, "The shop's profits are slim, so we cannot offer further delivery."
Master Zhang was taken aback, releasing Yu Fei and approaching the coffin to closely examine Uncle Cheng's body. Su Lili observed coldly from the side. After a long while, Master Zhang spoke in a deep voice: "Is the young master suspecting that the third young master is responsible?"
Qi Fengxiang turned around and saw her huddled there like a cold hen, her gaze vacant and her spirit half gone. He chuckled and asked, "Are you cold?"
The order in the capital quickly restored, and the people embraced Prince Pingyuan. Among the first to enter the city was the third son of the Qi family, Qi Fengxiang, who captivated countless young women and won the hearts of many beauties. His heroic deeds and charming stories became popular tales in the capital. Even the storytellers in the teahouses spoke of how the third son of the Qi family overcame strongholds, saved lives from fire and water, and rescued the common people from tyranny
Su Lili took the handkerchief and was about to express her gratitude when the woman in white continued, "This is not a place for you to linger, you should leave quickly." Her expression was indifferent as she traced her finger across the stone table.
Qi Fengxiang watched the group of people walk away, laughing with unparalleled mockery: "A bunch of fools, like their leader."
Qi Fengxiang said solemnly: "The death of your old servant has nothing to do with me. I dare to engage in nefarious deeds, yet there are some things I disdain to do."
Su Lili looked around in all directions. Qi Fengxiang chuckled softly and said, "Miss Su, I apologize for the inconvenience. I originally intended to invite you for a drink. However, since you were not here, I felt it inappropriate to wait at the door. Fortunately, your door is not very strict, so I took the liberty to come in." He elegantly extended his hand and said, "Please."
Su Lili hurriedly put down the handkerchief and said: "I... I am a visitor, I came here unintentionally and have offended you, madam"
But the beloved cannot be together
Oh?
This is a small town, not particularly prosperous. Qi Fengxiang has changed into ordinary clothing, and his demeanor is very low-key. However, even the most common clothes worn on him still exude sharpness and an extraordinary presence. Su Lili couldn't help but look him up and down, which earned her a disdainful glance from Qi Fengxiang, who then directed her to the guest room in the middle.
Su Lili finished wiping and threw the towel into the basin. She said to Fei Dao: "You get up and lift Uncle Cheng's feet; we will place him in the coffin." The old camphor coffin, which was intended to be sold to Mo Da, stood nearby. It is said that when a person dies, their soul departs, and the body becomes exceptionally heavy. The two of them exerted a great deal of effort to lift Uncle Cheng's somewhat stiff body and placed it into the single piece of camphor wood.
Yes
Yet there was still one person on the boat, around forty years of age, with a sallow complexion and a spirited demeanor. He was the first to greet, saying: "Young Master has not visited Weishui for quite some time; today, upon your arrival, you have encountered danger and been startled."
Ouyang Tan raised his pair of slanted eyes and glanced towards the Mei courtyard, his voice soft and insinuating: "What are the young master and the lowly wife discussing?"
Throughout the journey, he rented three adjacent guest rooms, with Su Lili staying in the middle, while he and Master Zhang occupied the two sides. Su Lili refrained from asking too many questions, feeling an unspoken sense of danger. Sitting by the window, she gazed out at the ferry terminal, where a row of wooden piers extended into the river, and three large characters fluttered on a banner—Peach Leaf Ferry. On the riverbank stood a solitary ginkgo tree, stark and unsightly, yet surprisingly harmonizing with the surrounding scenery.
Yu Fei reached out and tugged at the corner of her garment. Su Lili had many words in her heart but did not express them to him. Your father killed my father, and in the end, he lay unclaimed in the palace; ultimately, you are as pitiful as I am. Suddenly, Su Lili looked up and let out a soft laugh, difficult to discern whether it was sorrow or joy, as she stroked Yu Fei's hair and gently said: "Are you hungry? After being busy all morning, I haven't prepared anything for you to eat"
Su Lili nodded, and Qi Fengxiang leaned closer to her, gently squeezing her shoulder, "The clothes are indeed a bit thin. I wonder if the blankets here are sufficient; you should wear them to sleep tonight." His eyes sparkled with a unique charm.
On this journey, Su Lili disguised herself as a young writer's assistant, while Master Zhang played the role of an old servant, and Qi Fengxiang resembled the young master of a well-to-do family. The relationship between Master Zhang and Qi Fengxiang was also quite peculiar; it seemed to be that of a personal aide, yet not one of subordinate and superior, almost carrying a hint of a mentor-friend dynamic.
In the realm of court politics, some individuals suffer disgrace and ruin, while others rise to the pinnacle of power. The eight-year-old emperor once again issued a decree, bestowing upon Qi Huanchen the title of Prince of Fairness and Protector of the Nation. All three of Qi Huanchen's sons were granted the title of marquis, and both military and political affairs were entrusted to the Qi family. With the legitimacy of the imperial throne behind them, the Qi family issued a proclamation, commanding the world. The feudal lords across the land were fragmented, varying in strength, yet none dared to challenge the might of the Qi family.
It has been more than three months. Su Lili responded in a very low voice, feeling utterly ashamed compared to her ten years.
What a misunderstanding! Su Lili almost stammered, "Mr. Ouyang, I got lost and accidentally wandered into this place. I happened to encounter your esteemed wife, and it was not my intention to come here. I... where is my young master?"
Ouyang Tan stopped in front of her and spoke in a neutral tone: "He has already left"
Su Lili had never been good at finding her way since childhood, and this winding little path had surprisingly led her astray. After circling around a patch of bamboo, she could not see the fence gate, but a hint of bright red peeked out from the lush green. Su Lili looked around, finding no one, and followed the path forward, only to discover that behind the cluster of green bamboo were five or six plum trees scattered in the courtyard, blooming splendidly and exuding a fragrant aroma.
Wang Meng was taken aback, seemingly feeling that something was amiss, yet also appearing to believe that he had indeed said nothing at all, wearing a look of bewilderment. Su Lili secretly laughed to herself, thinking that with someone like him, playing tricks with this fox would surely ensnare him.
Ouyang Tan said in a lowered voice: "I have released your maid, so you should let her go as well"
Master Zhang said, "This child has been living here for some time; I must take him away."
Su Lili did not touch the cup, "I do not drink alcohol"
Hmph! That person coldly laughed and said: "I am not Ouyang Tan, I could be anyone else. Would you believe me if I told you?"
After a while, a young servant came over to open the door and glanced at the three individuals, saying: "May I ask who you are...?"
Su Lili noticed that she had seen through her, so she supported her hand and walked to the stone table. The woman slowly sat down, her hand brushing over the square handkerchief, and asked: "Did you cry just now?"
In this world, there are many people and events that cannot be changed, thus leaving no room for nostalgia. Thinking of those who are alive, even if they are far away, brings a sense of comfort to the heart, yet the longing is deeply felt, a sorrow that one is born not to know but to linger. It is like an addiction, difficult to break free from. The only thing to rely on is that phrase: "If I can fly out, I can fly back."
Ah? Su Lili was somewhat bewildered. She took a handkerchief and knelt slightly before her, then proceeded along the same path as before. As she turned the corner, she caught a glimpse through the shadows of the plum branches. The woman in white sat silently beneath the flowers, gazing at the inkstone, lost in thought.
Su Lili observed Master Zhang as he spoke eloquently, sighing: "All the affairs of the world are contained within Master Zhang's mind. To have me carve flowers for a mere coffin shop is truly a waste of talent, a waste of talent indeed"
Qi Fengxiang nodded and said: "Thank you very much, please convey my regards to the esteemed leader Huang. I will certainly visit the gang to pay my respects to him in the future"
Qi Fengxiang was taken aback, seeing her smile without any ulterior motives, without flattery or suspicion, only a sense of straightforward loyalty. A void in his heart was gradually filled, and as he tilted his head back, not a drop of wine remained in the cup. Without needing to articulate it, there was a clear sense of mutual understanding.
Su Lili looked up to the sky and said: "You have something to hold onto, knowing what you want to do. Recently, however, I have been feeling stifled, not knowing what I should do." Under the turmoil, grievances have been resolved, love has been parted, family has been lost, and alone, she feels the vastness of the world. This statement may sound like a common complaint, yet at this moment, she feels that Qi Fengxiang can understand her deeper meaning.
She felt a quiet gloom in her heart: Where have I come to? Then she saw a low stone table beneath the fallen blossoms of the plum tree courtyard. Su Lili slowly approached, inhaling the fragrance of the plum blossoms, gazing at the vibrant red all around her, a stark contrast to the sparse bamboo forest she had just seen. It felt peaceful and tranquil, as if she were in a realm beyond the world. On the stone table were writing brushes and ink, the ink in the inkstone had already frozen, but there was a thin piece of silk laid on the table, which appeared to be a woman's handkerchief. On the handkerchief, delicate characters were inscribed, writing a poem: "The young man knows not sorrow, the red of the smartweed and the green of the banana leaves."
Qi Fengxiang gazed intently at his face, his eyes narrowing slightly, and a smile played at the corners of his lips
Yu Fei shook his head and said softly, "I am not hungry." However, his stomach let out a loud "gurgle" in protest. Su Lili pulled him up, brushed off the dust from his clothes, and said, "Let's go take a look in the kitchen." As soon as she finished speaking, the door behind them made a sound as someone entered; it was Master Zhang, accompanied by four soldiers.
Master Zhang sat at the front of the carriage and said, "Sit tight." The horse-drawn carriage rumbled forward. It left the capital and headed northeast. It was the height of winter, and everything was bleak. Seven days later, they arrived at the banks of the Wei River, where fine snowflakes began to fall. Just past noon, the sky turned a leaden gray, and Qi Fengxiang called for the ferry to stop, deciding to stay for the night.
Qi Fengxiang pondered for a moment and said: "You may not speak, just answer me with yes or no."
Su Lili whispered, "Aren't we leaving yet?"
Qi Fengxiang smiled gently, the breeze light and the clouds sparse, "Aren't you free to do nothing?"
Yes
Is it Chen Beiguang's subordinate
The woman looked at the handkerchief resting on the table, leaned against the railing, and slowly walked out. Each of her steps was extremely slow, as if a gust of wind could blow her down to the ground. Su Lili took two steps forward, wanting to assist her, but when she touched the woman's sleeve, she suddenly realized she was wearing men's clothing and quickly withdrew her hand. The woman slowly said, "Sister, lend me a hand, will you?" and extended her hand towards her.
Su Lili also chuckled and stepped forward to knock on the door
Su Lili silently recited it once, feeling that the language was simple yet imbued with a subtle elegance. Upon further reflection, she could not bear to put it down. It was as if she had returned to the coffin shop, where the fragmented sunlight under the gourd rack reflected the well water sliding through her hands, crystal clear and icy; the morning frost, accompanied by tender sentiments, lingered on the eaves, while the wood said, "You go cook, and I will open the door for Uncle Cheng." It was as if she had returned to the coffin shop, where the fragmented sunlight under the gourd rack reflected the well water sliding through her hands, crystal clear and icy; the morning frost, accompanied by tender sentiments, lingered on the eaves, while the wood said, "You go cook, and I will open the door for Uncle Cheng."
Hmm? Do we still need to pry open the coffin
Su Lili said in a nonchalant manner: "Young Master Qi is not attending to Lord Pingyuan today, yet he comes here to engage in idle conversation"
Qi Fengxiang embraced the unconscious woman in white and said with a faint smile, "This woman is clearly of much more use to you; I will not engage in this losing deal."
Qi Fengxiang frowned deeply and exclaimed, "Boss Su, how can you be so vulgar? Is my noble sentiment really akin to that of a swindler? Or is it merely to deceive a few wooden stakes?"
Ouyang Qin, with unwavering determination, said in a gloomy tone: "She is not my wife."
The servant admitted them into the garden, where a moss-covered path led directly to the grass hall. Below the hall, a figure stood by the railing, gazing into the distance, dressed in flowing garments, appearing ethereal as they watched the guests approach. Su Lili could finally see this person clearly; they appeared to be in their late twenties, with slightly upturned eyes and a subtly hooked nose, yet they did not exude a sinister aura, only a sense of depth.
Qi Fengxiang nodded and uttered a single word, "Good." To everyone's astonishment, the hall master pushed open the cabin door and leaped into the bone-chilling river water of winter, not even causing a splash, and thus disappeared beneath the surface.
Aren't they the soldiers of the Qi family? Have they come here just to carry the coffin?
Master Zhang fell silent for a moment, sighed, and stood up, saying: "Please wait a moment, I will return in half an hour. Let us bury Old Cheng."
Qi Fengxiang seemed to be weighing his options in his heart, and Su Lili trembled all over, fearing that he would insist on capturing that woman. Thus, "Ouyang Tan" struck himself with a palm. After a long while, Qi Fengxiang finally said: "Change the person"
Su Lili raised a finger with great suspicion and said, "Not a single hair missing?"
She silently gazed at Uncle Cheng's graying hair, as if she could transcend time and space to hear his gentle words advising her, "Miss, do not be afraid. Although the master is no longer here, I will watch over you until my dying breath." A sudden wave of weakness struck her, and Su Lili leaned over the edge of the coffin, yet there were no tears to shed.
Master Zhang, please stop. Su Lili asked: "Where is the wood?"
Qi Fengxiang had a smile at the corners of his lips, yet he kept his voice flat as he said: "He must be muddled from drinking; it is mid-winter, where would the south wind bring the ripe barley?" He reached out to close Su Lili's door, not even glancing at the person, and went into his own room next door.
After the inn had burned for about half a stick of incense, more than ten figures in black cloaks suddenly gathered at the riverbank ahead, appearing like phantoms, silent and stealthy. The leader furrowed his brow as he gazed at the burning inn and said, "The people have fled, search for them."
After traveling for about a mile, a glimmer of lights appeared downstream, revealing a small boat docked at the shore. Qi Fengxiang lifted Su Lili and jumped in, followed by a burly man who also leaped in. Master Zhang caught them and said, "Set sail." With a slight movement of the bamboo pole, they departed from the shore, only unfurling the sail to drift downstream. The boat sped along, likely leaving other boats and horses far behind. Su Lili exhaled deeply and curled up in the corner.
He looked the three of them up and down several times with his pair of eyes, then spoke: "I am Ouyang Tan, living a leisurely and idle life, and I have been neglectful of you all. Please come inside."
Su Lili obediently followed, stepping on the thin snow by the shore. Before her lay a vast twilight scene, where water met sky, and all things lay dormant in desolation, reminiscent of the grand old times, stirring deep emotions. She heard Qi Fengxiang recite: "The landscape is like a painting, how many heroes have emerged in this moment." Su Lili sighed inwardly, realizing that there is indeed a world of difference between those who achieve greatness and those who do not. The scenery may be the same, yet the feelings it evokes are entirely different.
Qi Fengxiang's slender, beautiful eyes swept over lightly, melting the harsh winter ice into gentle spring water. With a slightly raised tone, she smiled and said, "Has Boss Su never thought about getting married?"
Bang! Qi Fengxiang's door has also closed
The Grand Master Bao Hui was killed by the Qi army and placed in a large black coffin, on which were inscribed four vigorous characters: "Lù Dù Guó Zéi"—a definitive conclusion indeed! The coffin was placed in the center of the marketplace, where the common people burned it with fire and smashed it with stones, reducing both the corpse and the coffin to ashes.
Qi Fengxiang gazed out the window at the sky, his eyes distant as he said, "The way common folk drink is the best; as they say, plain water is the most flavorful." He slowly turned his gaze back, but questioned, "Why are you looking at me like that?"
Master Zhang seemed to regard Su Lili as if he did not recognize her, scrutinizing her from head to toe, hesitating to speak. Ultimately, he took Yu Fei and walked towards the charred and collapsed storefront. Yu Fei turned her head to look at her, on the verge of tears. Four soldiers carried the black coffin under the eaves, following behind them, with the four raised characters "National Traitor" flashing across the coffin's surface.
