Description:
"The Legend of the Twin Dragons of the Tang Dynasty" consists of 63 volumes and is the longest work by Mr. Huang Yi. It narrates the era of warlords during the late Sui Dynasty, focusing on two small-time delinquents, Kou Zhong and Xu Ziling, who, with the courage of youth, strive to rise amidst the tumult of a chaotic world
This book perfectly combines historical background, military strategies, poignant love stories, and the world of martial arts. It is grand in scale and imposing in atmosphere, with a plot that is full of ups and downs and captivating descriptions of scenery. It unfolds a touching tableau of the continuous wars at the end of the Sui Dynasty, where the people suffer and various factions vie for power, depicting the efforts of enlightened individuals who, out of sympathy for the common people, strive for a peaceful and prosperous era. Furthermore, the author's eloquent language and masterful plot design have reached a level of excellence, and the dialogues are both engaging and humorous, making it impossible for readers to put the book down, creating a sense of immersion. This monumental work of one million words encompasses the essence of China's thousands of years of cultural wisdom in military affairs, history, astronomy, medicine, science, religion, cosmic mysteries, and aesthetic art, but more importantly, it reflects on the philosophy of life. This is also a perfect fusion of classical Chinese cultural knowledge and martial arts.
It is worth mentioning that the characters in the book are vividly portrayed, and the protagonists possess extraordinary charm. The main character, Kou Zhong, demonstrates remarkable resilience in the face of adversity, overcoming setbacks, finding opportunities in dire situations, and achieving extraordinary feats. His nonchalant demeanor, strategic wit, disdain for nobility, and unyielding confidence in the face of overwhelming odds, coupled with his unpredictable military tactics and humorous discourse, captivate the readers. He is a natural challenger, and in the presence of his wisdom and courage, countless impossibilities become possible, and numerous crises are effortlessly resolved amidst laughter. Alongside him, his companion Xu Ziling, with his ethereal grace and understated elegance; Ba Fenghan, with his cold and resilient demeanor; and Hou Xibai, with his refined charm, all draw readers in, making them unwittingly share in their fates and unable to disengage. Furthermore, the unwavering bonds among the protagonists, transcending all worldly emotions, embody a profound brotherly love and pure, unblemished familial and romantic affection that deeply moves the readers, leaving a lasting impression.
At the conclusion of the novel, when the opportunity for peace and unification in the Central Plains finally appears, Kou Zhong, Li Shimin, and others watch with smiles as the masses rejoice, accepting the people's cheers and worship. Kou Zhong, Xu Ziling, Ba Fenghan, Li Shimin, and Hou Xibai, these comrades, once again defeat the Turks with a small force against a large one, paving the way for a prosperous era in the Central Plains. When reflecting on the fact that this peaceful and prosperous age was achieved after more than a decade, through the sacrifices of millions who abandoned their homes and lives, and through the bloodshed on the battlefield, it is watered by the tears of the beloved protagonists in the book, filled with countless grievances, failures, the loss of loved ones, and heart-wrenching sorrow, one cannot help but feel moved and shocked. You will sigh, just as the protagonists in the book say, that everything in the past was worth it for this day! However, it must be noted that while the characters succeed, we must also recognize that the abrupt twists in the plot feel unreasonable and very stiff, easily leading to misunderstandings among readers. Moreover, many characters are one-dimensional, generic, and lack distinctiveness, which is one of the flaws of the novel. At the same time, such a grand scene, yet with such an ending, it must be said that the author has certain issues in managing the overall tone. Nevertheless, these cannot overshadow the success and excellence of this work.
Due to the fact that the plot of the novel is completely different from that of the television series from the very beginning, it has a conclusion that is more perfect and reasonable than that of the television adaptation
Li Yuan's admiration, Li Shimin's change of the era name to "Zhenguan" as a sign of gratitude, and the affection of the people allowed Kou Zhong and Xu Ziling, at a young age, to achieve great accomplishments and retire perfectly, living a happy life that fulfilled their childhood dreams. After reading the novel, it is likely that even the readers cannot clearly articulate what these two orphans conveyed, as the lessons learned from this flawless historical fairy tale and these two charming and outstanding youths are simply too numerous, far too numerous.
