The protagonist of the novel, Ye Chang, is an ordinary youth under the jurisdiction of Xiuwu County in the Tang Dynasty. As time passes, the young man gradually grows and ventures out of Xiuwu, traveling to places such as Chang'an, Luoyang, Longyou, and Liaodong.
